I have got to the point that I virtualy quit reading gun rags other than Rifle and Handloader. I was in Wally World a few days ago and looked the magazine rack over in sporting goods and ST caught my eye because of an article listed on the cover. I flipped it open and before I found the article I was looking for I ran into a reloading article by Lane Pearce. Further examination revealed he is the reloading editor. A big congrats. He is an old aquaintence I haven't seen in years. We used to haunt the Huntsville Al gun shops. I bought the magazine and read his article. I actualy enjoyed it. I wonder if he ever pokes his head in over here. If so "Woody Lane Pearce" I liked your article. reflex264

What a great decision on the part of ST to hire my friend Lane as their reloading editor. Any negative feedback he will receive in that position (and he will, as we all do) will be challenged with great intellect. I just hope someone makes the comment "he's no rocket scientist". That's because he really is a rocket scientist in his day job. I can't think of a more qualified person for the position.

Hey Bart. Yep I know about his day job. He is a very smart cookie. I used to aggravate him every time we ended up in the same place about selling me a set of those original hard rubber grips for my flat top/flat gate Ruger .22. He would always make a joke out it thinking he would find 3 more flat tops. I aint a betting man but if I was I would bet that he still has those extra grips tucked away. ;-) I don't get down to Huntsville like I used to so I haven't seen him in several years. I will certainly agree that ST made a wise decision though. And by the way glad to see you hanging out here. I was a big fan of your father as most of us were and look forward to years of reading "Bart". Nest time you talk to him get him to poke his head in this place. reflex264

Thanks, both of you, for the kind words about Lane. Adding him is only one of the improvements we've made to ST this year. Reflex, we've also added Ken Oehler who you will see posts here occasionally.
Bart, always good to bump into you, even if it's in the form of a screen name. Hope to see you in Ft. Worth next month, and if I don't, I look forward to seeing you at SHOT. Be safe.

I was a regular subscriber to ST for many years. I have let the subscription drop the last three years, as I seldom found any fresh and interesting material in the magazine.

Perhaps that is partly due to the wealth of firearms related information available from many very knowledgeable people right here.

While I am no longer a subscriber, I do check out the new issue of ST at the newstand each month. I look at the table of contents and thumb through the magazine to see if there is anything in it to make it worth buying.

The choice of issues which have followed me home the last few years were due in most part to articles penned by Mr. Rick Jamison. As a matter of fact the newest issue of ST at hand is Feb 06. It was purchased for Mr Jamison's article on the 30-06 AI and 30 Gibbs.

I am not at all familiar with the writings of Mr. Lane Pearce, and I do wish him luck in his new position. I will say, he has some mighty big shoes to fill, in my opinion.

Hey Scott. I noticed Mr. Oehler. Another great addition. I may have to re-subscribe. The magazine has a new flavor and it is more to my taste now. Thanks. reflex264

Hey Idaho Shooter,
"I am not at all familiar with the writings of Mr. Lane Pearce, and I do wish him luck in his new position. I will say, he has some mighty big shoes to fill, in my opinion. "

Lane is not new to writing by any means. He has been writing on and off for years. He has a methodical approach that I always liked and found informative. He is a little "different" than most gun rag writers but it comes from his scientific background. His latest work on 30-06 loads was actualy very interesting even if you like I wonder what else could be said about the 30-06. I am glad to see he found a home for his writing. reflex264

That sounds very interesting and perhaps refreshing. I will be sure to give the next issue of ST a thorough look through.

I will still miss Mr. Jamison. I really liked his research oriented aproach to handloading.

Rick Jamison cast a very small shadow compared to
Lane Pearce and Mr Oehler. No comparison.
Very glad that rj is gone.

ST's stock just went up big time.

Lane can relate to the novice and speak to the person of experience.

Scott E Mayer did real good.

Lane can't help but cast a big shadow. He is a big boy. Really. I can't knock RJ though. I don't want to knock anyone. I am just glad Lane is there. I enjoy his work and a fine fellow to boot. reflex264

Hello Bart,

I just found out you were aboard here, what a treat Sir. Many moons ago I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and talking with your dad as well as Bill Jordan at a LE conference in El Paso some time in 1967, the foggy brain has forgotten many details of that conference but at the BBQ at conference end the conversation was grand. The funny part is they were interested in the cattle rustling still going on here in Florida them days.

I am proud to say I had the chance to meet him even if he did corrupt my views on hand loads. He was quite the gentleman as was Mr. Jordan.

TLEE,

Thanks for the kind words. Glad to hear you were able to spend some time with the old man. He was usually a hoot to be around. Sure miss him.

Hoot is not the word, he was as fun and as serious in person as his writings. I had to have his first book good Friends, Good Guns, Good Whiskey for the "Me and Joe" plus the Jug Johnson tales. They still will put me on the floor laughing to this day.

I was amazed that he was as friendly to a 26 year old rookie Deputy Sheriff as he was with me, and I am glad you have followed in his footsteps. But he really was one of a kind.

Scott--

Have been following the changes in the magazines since we talked at SHOT last winter. Very good!

I must also mention that not only is Lane a very smart guy, but a good guy as well. Have had some very interesting and pleasant conversations with him at various get-togethers.

I thought RJ was a fine writer but I have to commend ST for letting him go after the law suit. Bad for the industry as a whole and to make matters worse he developed those rounds for his writing for the magazine. Makes everyone look bad, and him "look" GREEDY.
I think Lane will do a fine job. I've always like his writing.

RJ developed a great load and the folks at WW took advantage of him. The laod developed was going to be called the 300RJW- Ruger/Jamison/Winchester but a winchester Ballistician (aka AC) stole the idea and claimed he invented the load. In the end Winchester fired the guy and settled with Rick- net result we lost a great writer and good guy!!

Lane is a great guy as well !!
