Would one of you kind gentlemen who owns one of these please do a brother a favor? Would you please measure the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle?
Thanks.

I wonder if there is enough steel at the muzzle to have a .270 rebored to a .338-06.

I have that rifle in an '06 - assuming it's the same barrel profile as the 270, I can measure and report back in a bit. I believe I've read of others reboring that same rifle to 9.3x62...

My wife said, "Why don't you forget about that and just get the other rifle you were looking at?" - Dakota 7x57. She's a good woman!

She's a good woman. Unfortunately she's not a wealthy woman.

sounds like a neat idea. Kinda like I'm thinking of reboring a Ruger #1 .375 H&H into a .416 Rigby

Reverend Mike,
I can appreciate being a loony, but I'm not sure I'd do this to an Express.

It's already a 270, you can't improve it

The Express is gone.
Gold Labels, gone.
Red Labels, gone.
#1's are limited runs only.
They'll probably be down to 2 variants of Hawkeye's by next summer.
I'd leave that .270 a .270.

Reverend Killjoy Besides, here are the economics: Ruger M77 Express - .270 Win (new): $1800 Rebore to .338-06: 300 Total: $2100 Dakota 97: $8350

All good points. But that's still a buzz-kill!

Travis You mean a bunch of cheap schit RARs don't make up for those nice long guns? At least Ruger still makes nice single action revolvers.

Reverend Killjoy Exactly! Besides, Look at the JES website for reboring and there is no mention of Rugers. I had a Ruger rebored by a fellow in North Dakota who wouldn't make any promises, and said they (Ruger barrels) can be trouble for some reason. Mine is certainly not pleasant to look at - rough as a cob actually- but it shoots very adequately for hunting purposes, at least for whatever I'll ever hunt with a 358 Norma. I certainly would not mess with trying to rebore a barrel that has all that custom machining done to it.
