I absolutely love the blued, pre lock N Frames with custom wood grips. Unfortunately, they just don't work for me. The bone at the base of my thumb just gets hammered under recoil with wood grips. I have several Model 629s, including a pre lock Mountain Gun. With that said, the new L Frame (M69) just makes me smile -- it fits me to a "T". Certainly not everyones cup of "T", but I love mine. I have two, one has over 4500 rnds down the pipe, the other 1,500 plus. Had one out today and it just reinforces my opinion. Clockwise from left to right -- New M66 (.357), M69 (.44 Mag) and M617 (.22 LR), all equipped with S&W 500 Hogue grips. of course, YMMV Paul

Lots of smoke from various fires. Not as bad this week, but last week it was terrible. ...I should have come back out and brought the rain with me...would have cost me almost 1/2 as much in fuel this year as last...figures... But the weather was nicer last year... Bob

I really need a 4 inch 44 A 4" or 5" S&W .44 mag is a "must have" in my book, but maybe that is the western influence talking.

Man I need to get a 29/629 again. I'm going 4" as well, might swing a 69 also.

I got this 1988 LNIB S&W 29-4 for $200 + $16 sales tax in 1997. I put other grips on it. It is in the elite group of my guns that I have enjoyed and have no complaints.

The bone at the base of my thumb just gets hammered under recoil with wood grips. Me, too. My only current S&W .44 is a 329PD. Beats the CRAP out of me. It just is what it is. Reduced loads are not a viable option for me. Neither are rubber grips. My S&W J frame .357 isn't much better. Maybe a little less bruising but bigger problems from the rubber grips even than the .44 with wood. I might swap those factory rubber grips for wood grips one of these days soon. Tom

I don't know if anyone else noticed but our discussion about the ever versatile .44 magnum has been viewed more than a 1/2 MILLION times. It seems there are more than a few other .44 aficionados lurking.

Most were to see Flave's picture. I know I clicked it 57 times just for that. Can't say how many times my wife did.

don't think I have posted previously, my 6½" Classic The same range trip I had a scoped .44 Contender. The S&W easily out-shot the Contender.

Mackay, This has definitely become one of the best threads on the Campfire. Thanks for getting it started.

I cut the breech off a Marlin 444 barrel and put it on a Ruger carbine that had suffered a blown up barrel. The front part of a 444 chamber is just like a 44 mag chamber. Drilled a gas hole, put on a 4x scope and shot a group at 100 yards. Same old handguns load, 24 gr H110, 240 gr JHP, roll crimp into cannelure.
