I have a Glenfield 30A and recently obtained a Westernfield 740A.
The guns are essencially the same except I like the wood grain stock of the Westernfield better, far more handsome then the birch pressed stock of the Glenfield. And both made prior to all these new safety features.

MY question is can I consider both these guns as true Marlin products or are they bastards that fall outside Marlin's reputation Inheritance <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I have a Glenfield and other then wood they are the same internally and quality of metal. Consider it a Marlin and have fun. Mine shoots better then the actual 336 that I had. Ryan

I have a Sears Model 45 in 35 Rem , it's a straight grip 336. I think I got a better deal because it was marked Sears. It is 100% Marlin no matter the rollmark

That's the story of a bastard's life! It really hurts to know that you're just as valuable as your brother with who got the name but nobody will give you the same respect. They think that just because your daddy won't claim you, there's got to be something wrong with you.

Don't fire unless fired upon. But if they want a war let it begin here.

All of the 30As had subgrade wood; some (most) had non-Microgrooved barrels that were a touch longer than the Marlin Microgrooves, making them seem a little snout long over the magazine.

The action is identical.

Yep, both my Glenfield 30A and Westernfield 740 have that protruding barrel you described. I didn't know those protuding barrels were non microgrooved.

How can you tell? Can you tell by looking at the rifling?

Micro-grooves are something like 16 small grooves. Non-microgrooved rifling will be 4 or 6 grooves. VERY obvious if you look at the muzzle end of the rifle in question.

I asked Grampa once what the difference was between a registered bull and the other kind. He said, "The registered bull has papers."

The non-micro barrels should do better with cast bullets if you handload.

Vigillinus....I think you accidently reversed that statment about micro-groove. It's the deeper, ballard style rifling that normally works better with cast bullets. Micro-groove barrels sometimes do work.....sometimes not.

Just bought a Western Field today, a model 740 A-EMN (whatever that means.) The wood is walnut and there's about 90% blue on the rifle, and the stock is not quite as good as most of the Marlins of its time period that I've seen, which were straight-grained, plain and mostly very dark walnut. This one has a limb mark on the side, but it's stable and right on the outside of the stock.

It's not great wood for it's day, but by today's standards where a "hardwood stock" is standard on a lot of rifles, about average.

It was $199 in 30-30. Needed a car rifle.

Foremost by marlin.
What's in a name...it's a 336, no doubt, and shoots better than any of my thutty-thutties.
Made for J.C.Penney.
$125.00 used!

Can't beat it!!!!!
