This comment on another thread got me thinking:

My present "house gun" is a DD .300 Blackout, with 16" barrel, which is shorter, handier, and higher capacity than any "tactical" shotgun.

I wonder if something else might be better in close quarters, like indoors, due to a shorter OAL. Could be a bullpup, a M4 SBR, or even a M4 pistol.

Without getting into NFA items like a suppressed SBR, I think a 16" AR is as good as any for a HD long gun.

I still choose to keep a Glock 17 with Surefire X300 beside the bed though. I just like to keep long guns and cans in the safe.

Try a Tavor. LOL.

Much more compact and better balanced, with a full 16 inch barrel. Only way to get an AR as compact is with a ten inch barrel and near fully collapsed stock. It has other advantages too. It's basically the first bullpup that's been done right, thus its growing popularity.

16 inch DD/TLR-1HL, T1, Proearsgold hanging on the gun, am thinking about another BO in 16 inch however, that caliber is not nearly is concussive as the 223 even supersonic. I have a Benelli but familiarity with something when your up sh its creek seems important.

I keep three at hand. 1911-A1 Springfield with a Surefire X300 is by the bed.
Remington 870, with two shot magazine extension and a Surefire Fury is within reach.
Spikes Tactical M4, EOTech, and a Surefire G2X tactical, is also close by.

Used a 14" barreled M-4 for a few years for this purpose, still always felt it was kind of unwieldy. Also used a 14 inch barreled 870, a bit longer overall, but preferred it to the M4. Always thought 9 .32 caliber pellets (or 12 pellets for magnum loads) were preferable to a couple .22 M-4 rounds.

Never tried a Bullpup design, but always thought they would be a bit better, an interesting alternative.

Sam, I guess I'm just more paranoid than you.

Could go 14" AR.

Or 11.5" AR and a can.

16" AR if you don't like taxes.

There's always the 20" AR option.

Lots of choices.

It would have to be a short-barreled shotgun that's easy to operate in a desperate situation. A pump or semi-auto would be about right.

With a rifle, or even a handgun, you have to worry about the bullet penetrating a wall and hurting a family member. And it's quite conceivable that your bullet could fly through the front door and injure a neighbor.

Of course, buckshot can do the same thing, so a load with 6s or 4s might be a wise choice. At close quarters in a bedroom or hallway, the smaller pellets can do some real damage.

I am thinking most 55-65 grain soft points at 3000 FPS will not penetrate as much as a 124 grain 9mm...

all of this is overworked and best is what is best for you. I am digging the 300 BO idea again but would stick with supersonic ammo the 220 grain slugs at 1000 or so would probably sail thru 5 houses... grin

Hard to beat an AR in the M-4 configuration.
