Longbeardking, that setup looks awesome!

In response to the question, I've tried several vintage Weavers, a Lyman and a Balfor. Love the look of all three; they just seem right on a Savage. Stith mount on one currently and vintage Redfields on the other. Antelope in WY and moose in WA are on the menu for my '99's this year and those old fixed 4x's will work just fine.

If you feel you really need the modern glass, Weaver makes (made?) a modern version of their old K4. Looks pretty close and the optics are great.

I'd get on eBay and troll for a bit. The cost of those older scopes is reasonable and you can find a perfectly serviceable scope that will work great on your .308.

I have had a widebody Redfield on an early 70's Steyr Mannlicher .270 with set trigger that I bought new when stationed in Germany. Put the scope on about 10 years later....great scope, stays zeroed, only fogs if you breath on it (lost a good one one cold morning for that reason). The old Redfields are good scopes.

but they are filled with nothing more than an old El Paso hot air

Not quite right. By the late '50s they were charged with Nitrogen. I only use late '50s and later Weavers and the only time I had one fog on me it was because I took it into the warm shack to clean the rifle barrel and then went back and locked it in my trunk. The fog was frost from water condensing on the outside of the front lens. Melted it off with a match. Problem solved.

Didn't know that. Thanks!

A Redfield 2 3/4 Bearcub scope was on my 99 when I got it .It never gave me any problems, but,I replaced it with a much clearer Redfield 2-7,which looks just as good on the rifle.
