I'm sure most people have some type of smart phone or the like.

I'm not for nanny govt. but would it be possible to help prevent texting and driving accidents if phones could not be used if in motion. Say greater than 10mph.

After all, we aren't supposed to drive under the influence of drugs or alchohol, and it seems distracted driving is getting worse with these smart phones.

Just a thought.

I have been saying that for several years. The tech companies will not do it themselved, if one company made the move it would be suicide, it would need to be .gov driven. Good luck passing a sensible law.

You would have to mandate that all cell phones were GPS enabled all the time.

If are are willing to sacrifice the 4th amendment it's technologically possible.

a) many states already have laws against texting & driving, some even talking & driving

b) newer (2012+) cars disable texting via bluetooth if the phone is sync'd and the transmission is not in park. (you can still talk on the phone through the radio)

Bad idea. Too many exceptions needed. Like ... needing to call 9-1-1. Like the number of phones now that have voice recognition capability. Like people who are in the passenger seat looking up road maps online.

What about the GPS feature most of them have now? Pretty useful....

While I still have a flip phone, I have my wife check the weather while we're on a trip out of town, that's pretty useful, I like that weather app.

Then again, it's the wife's phone, and I'm busy driving, letting her do all that while I'm busy watching the road.

Maybe you're right, but since I let HER fingers do the walking, it seems like you'd be cutting off your nose to spite your face.
I also have her text messages to the folks we're visiting, letting them know when we'll get there, disabling a phone during driving would cancel that out, and it also helps during a convoy, like when my sister's family and mine were heading to MO for Dad's funeral last month. We were able to keep in touch with them while we were traveling, and helped us both keep away from tickets and such.

It would be another attempt to punish the many for the transgressions of the few, kind of like sensible gun control laws. There are plausible reasons for a passenger to use a cell phone, they would be denied that with a phone that self regulated.

The only way to stop teenagers or young folks from doing anything is to make it uncool. And heavy handed messages from the government only make something cooler.

If you want to stop texting and driving, get a concerted effort by movies and TV to portray those who do as the buffoons, the losers and the unpopular kids. It has to be subtle, kids can see though propaganda as well or better than adults (well, at least better than Democrat adults ). But fear of ridicule by their peers is the only thing that works on that demographic.

BTW, good luck with Hollywood doing that...

How about all those people on boats? There is no reason whatsoever for them to suffer.

What about those in the vehicle not driving,

Why not just collect all the cell phone and melt them down.

That would solve the problem.

We could start with restrictions on screen size and download speed. How about a waiting period and a federal back ground check before anyone is allowed to buy one. We could also prohibit the use by anyone under 21, can't have kids falling off skate boards while texting. We also need to outlaw certain colors of phones, starting with black and pink. Everyone knows black is evil, and pink is designed to draw in young girls to the evil work of texting.

After all, nobody really "needs" a smart phone. Land lines are so much safer since they can't be used in a moving vehicle.

While we are at it, better outlaw the interweb thing. You know, kids watch porn on it.

I know there are probably more cons than pros. There are laws against drunk driving, and also texting and driving in some states.

So, I am NOT advocating laws against the many for the benefit of a few. Just kinda thinking out loud.

Lord knows we don't need anymore frickin laws.

I heard of an app a couple years ago that was aimed toward parents of young drivers. It could be added to a phone and password locked so that it couldn't be disabled or removed. It basically disabled the phone at speeds above, IIRC, 10 mph. I believe there was an exception built in for emergency numbers.

We are about to take a two day Amtrack trip. Would be a bit of a problem if I phones would not work while moving.

That is more in line of what I was thinking. An option not a mandate. Would be great for parents to enforce upon there teen drivers.

I have a 16 year old boy. Just got me to thinking about him driving without another older driver later this year. I could get behind an ap that would hinder the ability to hinder certain functions while in motion.

I honestly don't think it would be a bad idea to have the texting feature disabled if the phone was detected moving. You could still talk just no typing while driving.

At least make the phones that way for all these retarded kids I meet on the road that are texting. Of course the little fuuckers would figure out how to disable it in about a day.


Maybe I don't give a chit about not being able to text while driving because I happen to think it's a bad idea. Riding shotgun, tough chit texter, either call or pull over.


Of course A LOT of people love their fancy little smart phones as much as we love guns so I can see why it would irritate the nerds.

I personally am looking forward to the day when carrying my cel phone becomes an option.

We had a classic texting incident near here a couple years ago. A college girl was traveling alone from Logan, UT to Caldwell, ID. She'd been texting her friends the entire trip. At one point, she sent a text that she really should stop it because it wasn't safe. A few minutes later, while going up a steep hill, she was traveling at 75 when she hit the back of a truck doing 30, with his 4 ways flashing.

She was breaking the law as it was. More laws wouldn't have stopped her. The only thing that would have done that is to take away or disable the phone.
