Been working with bone recently and going thru the steps to learn to effectively dye and work with bone. If you find the right experts, it's amazing the results you can get and I think the results are coming out well. Lots of knowledge out there, but amazing how much BS is mixed in. Anyway, here's a couple of my most recent efforts and I'm pretty happy with them. Let me know what ya think... Dale

Yep.
Read somewhere that large animals having the longer tibia/shin bones support greater weight per sq in., thus making for a denser, stronger end product.

I have dyed a couple hundred sets. Some look great and some you can't match up at all. R.W.Wilson Is the best at dyeing camel bone I.M.O.If you see him at a show look at it and you will buy some.

R.W. has some nice stuff but I want to dye my own. I think my process is starting to work pretty well and seems to be producing pretty consistent results so far.

Have done it both ways. The camel bone is very dense so doesn't seem to benefit that much from stabilizing from what I've seen so far. The dying process is extremely colorfast so no real benefit there so I'm still playing with that aspect a bit. I've jigged a bunch of sets of bone but haven't done one of these yet. Will likely be doing a set soon.

Do you jig the bone before you dye it, or afterwards...?

I jig it after it's dyed. That's one of the last steps when I build if I'm jigging the scales.

Some of Dale's earlier efforts ain't exactly shabby. The wood could give one a "boner"............. and the bone could give one a "woody". Either way Dale's stuff is cherry. Best, GWB

A coworker gave me a bison leg bone.
Gonna try it in the near future.

The old way was Ritz dye. Boil it in the solution. Just don't spill any of the dye.

Yeah, and watch you don't get that dye boiling to hard or it will splatter. My mother used to use Ritz dye all the time to dye fabric when I was a kid.

RW was at our show in Janesville WI this past weekend. He is continuing to refine his process. Mike at Wood Labs does a nice job also.
And of course, everything seen here looks real good.].
I have acquired enough that I will not be doing my own, but good job by those who do their own and good luck to those starting to do their own.

I think the bone gives it the old timey look. Other than the smell which I could do without.
