Check the bolt face for a sliver of brass that may have broken off one of the rims and causing the lack of extraction. I had this happen to my M77/22 one time. A quick flick with a very fine pick cleaned out the sliver and it was back to normal this sliver was down around the rim of the recess.

Mine doesn't have very good extraction with CCI brass but is fine with Hornady and Winchester brass. I need to do something with it as the CCI's are consistently more accurate. Never have taken time to really study on it yet to see whats up.

if for some reason there seems to be an issue with the extractor, there was a guy on rimfirecentral talking about making a beefier extractor and listing them for sale a few weeks back. you may want to go to the M77/22 section there and check it out.

Simple fix is;
Take a triangle needle file and cut a steeper angle on your extractor.
I had to do this after I installed a match chambered barrel on a 10/22.
The chamber was just tight enough the rifle wouldn't extract 100%
After this operation it would.

I tried all the suggestions and nothing worked,,,,sooo time for a little RedNeck Gunsmithing, Poped out the retainer band, cut a 1/4 inch long toothpick, put under rear end extractor and snapped in retaining band. Killed stump in back yard 9 shots straight, never failed, was failing every 3-4 shots B 4. OK guys I can head you laughing, but that what I did. I just purchased new Ruger American .17 HMR and having trouble ever so many rounds refuses to pull empty out. good scrubbing, extractor hook looks good ??? The empty pops out easy with tip pocket knife. Anybody got any suggestions, Hate to ship back to Ruger.

Not laughing at all. Sounds like a fix for a similar problem on my Marlin 917. Thanks!
Was that a round or flat tooth pick?
