I'm getting velocity at 47.5 gr CFE223 that is very close to 49.5 gr Big Game. Since BG might not be available this year I'm looking really closely at CFE. Anyone using it?

Yep, it is fast and accurate for me, although it is temp sensitive. I use 48.9 gr. and out of a 22" browning, it runs 3275 at 85 degrees and 3200 at 30 degrees.

Pharmseller,
I got very similar results with 47.5 CFE223 in my 22" 7-08, close to the same velocities as with Big Game, around 3200 fps at 70 degrees. In my rifle it didn't shoot as well as Big Game but I didn't fool with seating depth, which sometimes helps when switching powders.
I also didn't shoot the load much at different temperatures, but will note that any powder I've ever tested gets higher velocities above 70 degrees--though with "temperature-resistant" powders the rise normally isn't as much with other powders. But most of the time I'm more concerned with cold than heat, and quite a few powders do well in cold, including Big Game. Haven't tested CFE223 in real cold, but Hodgdon claims it's temp-resistant so wouldn't be surprised if it did OK.

I've spoken with the nice lady at Ramshot several times over the past year to inquire as to the expected availability of Big Game. It seems as if every time we speak she moves the expected date back a month or two. At this point I am done holding my breath, it gets here when it gets here. In the meantime if I can get comparable velocity with CFE I am willing to play the seating depth game to find the optimal load. The local SW has an 8-pound jug of CFE and that would take care of me for a long time. P

That's quite a bit above max. How do your cases look? Are the primer pockets still tight? P

I loaded some 120 bt as well, and they were just as fast, and I had no pressure signs with either bullet.

Yeah, I get the same info, so am slowing down on using my remaining Big Game, Hunter and Magnum. But I use far more TAC than any of those anyway, in various varmint rounds, and have most of one jug and two new ones on hand.
CFE223 is good stuff. We have so many great powders these days!

I'm using way less Hunter these days, as I'm only loading for 2 or 3 .30-06 rifles. I'm now loading for (and more frequently) 3 7mm-08s.
I wanted to try BG in my son's .30-06 with 150 grain Accubonds but I don't have enough for experimentation. Varget is my second choice and I have a bunch of it.
When you're on your last pound of Hunter let me know, I might be able to help.

Thanks for the offer on the Hunter, but right now have about 9 pounds left, which hopefully will get me by until more arrives!

Speaking of TAC, I just rolled some 50 gr TTSX using 26.4 grains and CCI400 primers in my .223, for 3230 fps MV. T3 Lite stainless, so 22 7/16" barrel. Do you have experience with TAC and 50 grain TTSX from a .223?

Any thoughts on how CFE might work with 140 gr Barnes?
