I have a couple of bats that have took up residence under my second floor porch. I like having the bats around but don't like them hanging over my door. There are tons of plans for bat boxes online and I think I want to build one for them but is there one design in particular that works best?

I'm sure that would help but really have no idea what species it is. It's brown with short hair and looks to be about 5 inches long when it's hanging in the corner of the porch. In west tn if that helps.

Occasionally have to carry one outside and set it free.
Other than that I don't pay any attention to them.
Never looked it up but I was recently told they're all prtected species now. ???

what part of the country are you in? down here we have mescan free tails, their most common here but we have over 27 species. and depending on which one its hard to say what type of box or set up they would like. i know free tails like palm tress and shingles.

That's why I'm wanting to build them a safe place to stay other than my front porch.

just don't let one bite you, a few years back a teen died in Victoria of rabies, wasn't bitten but the bat was flying around in the house and its believed some saliva got on her.can't believe i use to catch them as a kid.

I'll try to get a picture of it tomorrow and maybe you can get a better idea of species.

We have a big bat problem. Several boxes have not helped. They like the warm air as it gets colder. They will probably find a way in at some point.
