This tin type has been authenticated as a pic of Billy the Kid playing croquet. He's the one standing in front of the left corner of the house. It's only the 2d known photo of Billy and it's estimated that it would bring $5 mill at auction. They went to great lengths to authenticate it. Here's the story: The Kid

The picture is interesting and raises lots of questions.
I'm not convinced though.
There's a guy named Drew Gomber in NM. He is probably the best factual historian of Billy the Kid, and the region's old west gunfighters and characters.
When Drew is convinced, then I'll be convinced. Lots of "fill in the blanks", and tremendous profit in that photo. Where there's money, there's motive.

For one thing, even though folks weren't as tall back then, Billy was known for being very short. He looks about as tall as all the other guys. I don't know what average was then...5'6" or 5'7"? He was supposedly shorter than that though.

Sure looks like the guy in the only known photo. powdr Maybe. The guy in the portrait looks to have a longer nose and face, vs the new photo guy having a pug nose on a much less horse face. Then again, he kinda looks like this guy too... The first picture has been a controversial one as well as to whether it's actually Billy Antrim.

I don't know. I always read that he was very short. In Billy the Kid a Short and Violent Life by Robert Utley, he is described as 5'7" which had to have been about average for those days. I always thought he was supposedly closer to five feet than five-and-a-half.

Interesting photo and story. One of the investigation issues was the event depicted in the photo. It is assumed it is Charlie Bowdre's wedding. Allegedly that's Charlie and his new bride mounted on horses. Here's a blowup of the photo.......and another pic of Charlie Bowdre and wife. Charlie was killed by Pat Garrett's posse at Stinking Springs a couple years after the photo.

Shouldn't the mallet be on the left side, if I only had an extra 5 million. Really?

I think he was killed by Buckshot Roberts at Blazer's Mill. Not sure Garrett was sheriff then.

Charlie killed Buckshot Roberts after Buckshot killed Dick Brewer at Blazer's Mill. As an interesting side note, I know some of the Blazer folks in NM. One of them sits on the council of the Mescalero Apaches at the reservation there.
