1. 1" Talley detachable rings and steel base.
2. 1" Talley Lightweight Alloy scope mount

for .22 Hornet, Model 70, pre 64 (.860), Serial No. 74xxx, 1947
Scope is Leupold FX-II 4 x 33mm, 1" tube.
Would extra low or low Talley rings fit above setup?

Suggestion are welcome for alternate scope rings/base setup.

I inherited two pre 64 22Hornet, both manufactured in 1947.
Am 3rd generation owner so they have a lot of sentimental value.

One has a Lyman Alaskan 2.5x scope with blunt vertical post with thin horizontal line in Stith mounts, the 2nd 22H has never been scoped.
Using open sights is getting difficult with middle age limitations of eyesight/reading glasses hence the need for a detachable scope mounts mounts on the 2nd rifle. I am postponing replacement of the Lyman Alaskan scope for sentimental reasons.

47's should not be drilled and tapped from the factory, did someone already D&T these rifles?

Lynx, You MAY get away with low talleys without the bolt hitting the eyepiece but not extra lows. Also, you may run into problems getting the scope far enough back with the available tube length on the long action. You may need to consider an offset (extended) setup.

Reelman is correct, rear bridge should not be d&t on these guns. The gun with the Stith should use the factory d&t receiver sight holes and the rear sight dovetail to mount the scope and the rear bridge should not have any holes. The gun that has never been scoped should not have any holes in the rear bridge....

Reelman, John and Poconojack,

Thank you for your replies. Unfortunately both guns rear bridge has been d&t. sr no 72xxx (open sights)& 74xxx (scoped)

What is surprising is the gun with Stith mounts uses the factory d&t rear left side receiver sight holes and the rear sight dovetail to mount the Lyman Alaskan scope

I did check with one of the elders in the family who is 80 years old and has used these guns. As far back as he can remember the Stith rifle was always scoped with the Lyman. He feels the d&t could have been done when the rifles was relatively new.

John, Any suggestions for a offset mount/base for the fxII 4x38mm.

Due to sheer nostalgia I would like to send the Lyman Alaskan scope for cleaning/restoration. Any suggestion most welcome? A net search suggested

With the exception of some H&H receivers the rear bridge was factory d&t above SN 67000...

Low steel ring Talleys will work fine with that scope...

That is what I have on one of my fwts. but did use the set with the extended (rearward) front base.

Were it my Hornet, I wouldn't think twice about mounting a Fecker or Unertl scope, 8 or 10x on it and call it a day. Use the two factory holes in the receiver ring for the rear base and a dovetailed base in the rear sight dovetail. It's what a lot of knowledgeable guys did with them when they were new, and still a viable thing to do.
