Handgun guys:
I was looking at a 1911A1 (1943 Colt Manufactured) the other day with grip scales that obviously aren't authentic. They appeared to be some sort of faux stag. What is the authentic grip scale and can they be bought anywhere? If I buy it and want to replace the grip scales, what should I look for?

How about these.......10,000 year-old Mammoth ivory. Always like the idea of grips made from an endangered species, but an extinct one is even better.

That gun started out with hard rubber grips or a hard type of plastic, usually had a reddish tint, I carried one in the service. The one I have today has samber stag grips, feels much better than the originals and I think it looks better also. 1911 grips are available in about a 1000 different versions, pick one that feels good and looks good unless you want nothing but original. ![[Linked Image]](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/jbmich/SW.jpg)

Thanks for the link. That's just what I was hoping someone could provide.
I know there are lots of grips out there, but when it comes to an old warhorse like this, I prefer original.

A friend put those wooly mammoth grips on a high polish .38 Super, like an El Toro. Looks very good.

The authentic grips are "Coltwood" (plastic), Type II (with strengthening ribs).
The grips are brownish plastic with full checkering and reinforcing rings around the screw holes. The "strengthening ribs" are molded ribs on the back of the grip, as opposed to the "flat" grips.
