In your opinion, is the 55g Barnes bullet adequate for whitetail inside a hundred yards?

I'd chrono my load, google for pics of expansion vs velocity, and then run some ballistics calcs to see how far out I'd expect velocity to correlate to a level of expansion that made me happy.

Around 100 yards…

Outa this one….

….seals, admittedly, are very good expansion 'media' for the monolithics. (Those were 53 grain XLCs fired from a 1-12" twisted 223.)

and you got those to stabilize? I had issues with 45s and 12 twist 22-250... at least accuracy wise.

Maybe the cold up there keeps em from opening. Grins.

Tell you a little secret…..you don't actually need 1 MOA accuracy to make them work. wink

Yeah, I accept that from time to time...

But this was 12 moa accuracy at 110 yards....

But I did even better, tossed that tube and put a Rock 308 MTU tube on the gun and an MC stock and in 308 Win its good to a LONG ways out there with 185 bergers.

I'd have to have a wings level indicator in some of that weather. LOL

A Canadian member here (North61 ? ) successfully hunts caribou with a .223rem using Barnes and Nosler partitions.

We nearly lost a staff member a few years ago when he tried to walk between buildings in a storm. He ended up walking away and following a trail uphill, apparently not realizing he was going up. He finally dug into a drift nearly 1/2 mile away after becoming aware of his confusion. Vertigo is real. It's actually kind of funny that some people think they have a 'special sense' of direction when the reality is that people can easily get 'up' and 'down' mixed up - even with the aid of gravity available.

caribou die easy mostly.. wouldn't bother me in the least to have only a 223 for them.

It would limit the length of my shots though...and I've been known to stretch things a bit there.. at times under circumstances. LOL

I know of young men from bush Alaska who use the .223 on everything, including moose and grizzlies. It's all they've ever used, so never realized it wasn't enough.

Yes. Nor have I cared for a caliber so light when the going gets long, even with hard bullets. It should be noted that those who rely heavily on 223s tend to get close and often make head or neck shots. I can say that the fellows who I've passed out 64 Powerpoint reloads to, to replace their 55 factory loads (either sp or FMJ), have had nothing but good things to say about them.
