For my seven year old Grandson? Would prefer a single shot. I remember as a kid a single shot with a knob at the end of the breech to cock it. Want something of quality that will last and hold value. Any help?

I grew up with a Marlin model 25 and fifty years later, I still have it. There are some scratches on the stock from lots of use but it's still working just fine. I think the modern version is the Marlin XT-22YR. Street price about $200.

A Winchester Model 47 if you can find one. It cocks when you lift the bolt handle and the safety engages automatically. Some of the knob cocking single shots can be hard to cock for young kids .

Nice I like it. A shortened down version. He is a bit on the small side and I think that would fit him. Is that a peep sight?

I have two of the greatest .22 single shots ever made.

Winchester 67, it was granddads, and has to be one of the first make, and a Savage Stevens model 15 that was dads.

Both shoot great. The Model 15 is more kids/teenager sized, while the 67 is a man sized .22.

The Savage Cub is a good accurate rifle. My three sons have learned to shoot with one, as will #4 when he gets a few more years behind him. Single shot, aperture sight, with the accu-trigger. Not likely to be a collector's piece anytime soon, but I doubt you'd lose much money on one.

He'll outgrow a single shot in a hurry. How about a magazine fed bolt and only let him load 1 round at a time for now?

I have an old Marlin 80 bolt that's a tack driver and is highly reliable. Sears sold it under their label for a long time, too. I have one of those, too, and the parts are all interchangeable.

Remington 514. Cheap, accurate, light, and small.

Itasca: In the past when posed with similar needs, I have searched for the fine (and kind of rare!) Winchester Model 67 "Boys Rifle" - this is a "shortened" version of the standard length (stock and barrel) Model 67.
This Rifle indeed does have the "knob" to pull to cock the Rifle and it has a safety lever.
It has real good sights on it as well for the novice.
I have taught several kids, grand kids and youngsters how to shoot and handle Rifles with this great fitting little Rifle. Best of luck in your search and endeavor.

Yes, I agree he will out grow it in a hurry. I want him to have the experience of ONE shot. I really appreciate the advice though. I'm always open to advice. On the top side some of the older .22 single shot's are worth a few bucks down the line. I want him to understand that some quality firearms DO appreciate with care over the years. I don't know about outgrowing the single shot rifle. I bought a savage cub for my youngest to learn with. It has become the rifle that I shoot and use the most.

Here's a dandy, but you'll have to fight some people for it. There's some other people that want it. In the condition that it appears to be in, I'm guessing that the winning bid will be around $300. They're serious tools,...made back when a good, accurate .22 rifle was something to put a rabbit in the pot or to keep birds from eating up the strawberry patch. If you want the best single shot bolt action .22 out there, this is it.

I've still got my old Model 67. I'll never let it go.
