I built a new steel gate for the cabin road and also a steel truss to span across the tops of the posts that the gate will go on. The chickenbuck sign will hang from that truss.

Nathan and I drove out to the cabin gate spot last night to dump those items off where they will be installed. The "road" is horrible. Thank goodness we all have 4 wheel drive. No let up in sight, its raining again this morning.

One of the reasons Nate and I made the trip last night was to do a very quick scout on a couple of buck hot spots. These are natural areas in the forest that happen to be a stage of sorts for all of the rutty buck activity. I believe other hunters will agree that you can find areas in the woods that are repeat signpost hot spots that span generations of bucks.

Well, one of the hot spots was obviously active with fresh scrapes. We set a camera up on that scrape and backed out.

The other hot spot we were going to put a camera on.... Inconclusive. We haven't given up on it but we ran out of daylight.

It was exciting to see a brand new scrape though. Does don't make scrapes

That's awesome Dave !

Guessing Nate's gunna claim that spot, due to all his "hard" work scouting it out.

I hear ya on the rain.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY POURING HERE TODAY.

They are calling for it to turn to snow by evening, though.

grin

We know how fun it is to walk a slimy forest floor with a coat of wet snow on it. lol! Snow packs under the boot and the shoe shaped snow wafer slides on the grease under it.

It's going to be awesome. lol!

The deer will be absolutely silent, your ears are no good, keep your head on a swivel.

Scouting that scrape spot last night was actually Nate's idea, so I'm thinking he may be hunting that spot. lol

For sure! All taken from the same type of area you describe

I'm sure that you are like me, in that, you'll give up the best spots anyway, in an effort to ensure the "kids" & Pam have the best chance of success !

Ok here's a question for you guys with kiddos...

Do I bring my gun when I sit with my little buddy? We have room, but it's not like I'm going to shoot one if he hasn't.

yes you do! dont ever give up TOm. the reasoning behind that is if you have to go looking for the deer after jack hits them, then you still have a helping hand if necessary.

Bring it.

Play backup for the kid.

It may not be needed, but if you end up with a noisy wounded one out there... "Bleeeaaaahhhhh!"

You can turn that noise off real quick and keep the happy hunter emotion train on the tracks, so to speak.

Speaking from experience...

Agree...

Dave and the guys are spot on. You never know when backup is needed. Besides, going deer hunting without a rifle in hand....you get the drift.

Never do when I sit with Deb & never used to, when I sat with Doug.

In my mind, it should be all about them.

Hey, if another deer walks in after the shot, you have 2 choices; you can always borrow that sweet lil' .223 & rock the second one, or look at your little guy & say; "Go ahead, shoot mine too".

Did that with/for Deb, not last season, the season before. Got good "merit" points.

She shot the first one & 2-3 minutes later, out walks the other one.

I got a double too, about 4 years ago, doe came in & I shot her, & while attempting to organise my gear to exit the tree, buck came in nose to the ground, down the same trail she had used !

Double how's about a triple in less than 10 seconds
10 seconds of fun wasn't worth the hours of work getting um down the ravine and over the creek
Young and stupid was I

Way too far down a steep ravine over a wide creek and then quite a bit more to the hunting camp
