Now we need to dip into the 20's tonight if we have any chance of having it stick around into the weekend.

Snow for the opener! Hope it sticks for you guys, Dave.

Hard to imagine it snowing like that there when it was another summer - like day here with temps into the mid 70's.

Freezing rain here now, praying for the white stuff overnight !!

Ground is so warm though, doubt it will stick.

Unless it keeps coming !

lived and hunted deer in Minnesota my whole life, but never really liked snow for deer hunting. I know some say its easier to see deer when there is snow, and also easier to track them if wounded. But I think around 40 degrees is about perfect deer hunting weather.

Good luck to everyone on Saturday. Shoot straight!!!

I like freezing or cooler, lol. Because for one, it's hard to regulate the cabin heat (wood stove) if it's above freezing. And of course if we hang some deer, I like em to cool off real good.

Plus I like to walk across the swamp and I can't do that unless it freezes pretty good.

Well, time to finish packing and move all the gear up to the dining room so I can load up first thing tomorrow and get on the road. Good luck to all the Chickenbuckers, and all our other Minnesota boys this weekend. Other states have had their openers-now it's OUR turn. I hope to hear some great stories from the hunts. We will be up in the Outing area on a new spot.

May the wind be in your face, the sun at your back, and a nice buck coming down the trail.

Best wishes guys-now go get 'em!

To me, 25 degrees is perfect for deer hunting. It freezes the swamps, it keeps the deer cool and does it pretty quick, and it's not uncomfortable for sitting and not too hot for walking around sneaking and peeking.

Dave, we only had rain today in Embarrass Township, no snow. Minnesota November weather, you never know what you will have for opener. 50 years ago the first time I hunted with my dad, it was -22 opener morning, and I remember hunting in a short sleeve orange shirt with temp about 70.

Good luck to all Saturday.

We will all be heading out to the cabin tomorrow.

Saturday will be our 9th MN deer season opener out at camp chickenbuck.

It's been a hell of a memory machine, which was my original intent if you look back to the beginning of this monster thread.

We have succeeded in creating and sustaining a gathering place for friends and family. Selfless friendships, loyalties, selfless acts. I'm so proud of everybody and so very happy with our accomplishments.

I'm also very grateful for all of the friendships we have made here and for 9 years of positive support and help, humor, suggestions etc.

Thank you all.

Remember those hunters and camp members that have gone on ahead of us to those campfires and hunting grounds in the heavens above. Remember them, speak well of them. Tell their stories, tell stories of them.

Go on out there, teach the young members, teach them the simplest things... Things that are so second nature that they may seem unimportant. How to make a pot of coffee with an old perc pot. How to light the wood stove, how to light a camp fire, sharpen a knife, start a chainsaw, run a chainsaw, track a deer, read sign, clean a rifle, cook some food....

Teach them something, and don't be afraid to go into detail explaining why you do it this way and not that way.

Most importantly, be safe and best of luck to you all.

Dave

A last minute story for you guys. My son's buddy Tyler, who is just home from a 5 year stint in the Marines is hoping to hunt with us this weekend. Tyler scored real high with the rifle and was actually an instructor on the rifle range. Tyler called me to night, and he's having trouble buying a license because he never took the hunter's safety course. 5 years in the Marines-made expert with the rifle, was a weapons instructor, but can't buy a friggin' hunting license! He hunted with us several years ago as a youth on the one time exemption where he could get a license without taking the safety course, but now, after 5 years in the Marines, they apparently think he never learned safe gun handling practices. He's getting on the phone with the DNR again first thing in the morning to try to get it worked out. Barring that succeeding, he'll take an on-line safety course and should then be legally able to buy his tag. Poor kid just got home two weeks ago. Sometimes you just gotta laugh.
