I fill mine with air from political ads. That stuff NEVER goes away. The trouble with it is that it seems to lack much substance or pressure, but there is no shortage of it for certain.

Older vehicles sometimes have corrosion issues at the bead seat. Tires should be dismounted to address this issue by cleaning up the rims and tire bead with a wire brush and applying a sealer before remounting. New valves at the same time could be smart. Put a mark on the tire at the valve before you take them off so you don't have to balance them again.
