I just picked up a McMillan for my M70 classic .300wsm from their online store. It is inlet for a 1pc bottom metal, mine has the 2pc. I've read that the PTG piece can be installed with minimal in letting for the factory 1pc. Will I need to change out the magazine box as well?

Looking at the factory mag box in the factory stock, the bottom of the box is flush with the bottom of the stock...this seems like it would interfere with the sides of 1pc bottom metal.

The stock should be here today, so I'll test fit and put up some photos for reference.

*I moved this from the Winchester Collectors forum as I realized this one may be more appropriate.

No need to change out mag boxes. The sides of the 1pc unit go around the bottom of the mag box. The stock inletting is bigger in the bottom of the mag well to accommodate this.
I have used PT&G with no issues for the past few years. It is probably the simplest and most cost effective route.

TDN is correct. I've done several of these 2 pc to 1 pc. I've used PTG and also used factory one-piece bottom metal from MGW, or off e-bay, gunbroker.

Thanks! I was assuming the 1pc fits the mag box exactly as TDN describes, but couldn't find any photos of the underside of one. I've ordered a PTG aluminum unit with the Oberndorf latch.

Nicest looking and operating, IMO, are the steel units from Williams.

I have a couple of the Classics in Edge stocks made for newer 1 piece bottom metal. You can buy an adapter for $10 and make it work. Or you can simply use 2 flat washers between the floor plate and bottom of the stock as a temporary fix. I've gone both routes and the rifle shot just fine both ways. There is a small gap between the floor plate and trigger guard. Purely cosmetic and does not effect functioning.

I did eventually spring for the PT&G aluminum metal. Fit was perfect and I like it much better, no more gap. It also took about 3-4 oz off the guns weight compared to the factory steel.

Question for those who have used the PT&G bottom metal.

Does the bottom metal include a new latch or do you need a latch kit?

Thanks,

Scott

I've only bought a few from PT&G. A couple of them came assembled and the others came with all the parts, but I had to assemble it myself.

I have ptg aluminum on my m70 edge stock. Lightweight and came assembled. I got it in brushed aluminum and had it cerakoted satin mag. Only thing sucks was that it took PTG forever to get it to me.

Thanks 406_SBC. I just couldn't tell from the descriptions and I never got an email back from them.

I've also got PT&G aluminum 1 piece on my M70 in an edge stock. I had it coated satin mag just like plumashntr. It came all together and was ready to go, no latch or other parts needed. I like it a lot, looks good, fit great, works great, and cut unneeded weight.
