Just finished reloading a few rounds with some Hornady 70 grain SP's. Book says COAL should be 2.510 but even with the cases trimmed to 2.040, seating the bullets to the top of the cannelure still leaves me with a COAL of 2.530. Is this a problem? I know I have read before about shortening the tips on the Hornady's. Doesn't seem to me that it would be a safety issue as the rounds drop nicely into the chamber without any apparent contact between bullet and rifling. Enlighten me please.

you dont trim the bullet for safety or so that you can seat to a crimp groove. you trim that bullet so that it will stabilize in the twist in the 22 HP rifles. regarding coal, my rifle's max magazine length to feed properly is 2.560 and I would imagine yours is close to that. any length under that that chambers easily will work fine, I would prefer to get the ogive as close to the rifling as possible, without touching.

also the book coal was arrived at using the original projectile that Savage used. and that bullet is probably not available to most reloaders these days.

Thanks very much Diesel 10. I suspected it was the stabilization issue but thought it better to ask. I talked with a fellow last week who has been shooting the exact same recipe through his 1899 H and has been getting good accuracy without tumbling ( nice round holes in paper ). Guess I will see how my H likes them when I get to the range next.

Bingo. I use a OAL of 2.550 and it works in all my tubes and feeds as well. I ignore the cannelure on any bullet in any rifle cartridge- it's there for crimping purposes and since I never crimp anything...
