Wow, what a great little gun. Picked it up at local pawn shop a while back, just wanted something handy to carry in the front seat. The stock was beat and I decided to clean up and then bedded and floated the barrel, re-worked the grip a bit, sanded and camo-painted. I mounted and bore-sighted a 1-4 Vortex. Sighted-in today and then let it cool. Fired three quick shots with only time to breath, aim and push the trigger. I was rewarded with a .735 group. I think I'll go get a deer!

Nice rifle, I have one. It was handed down to me from my Grandfather. It shoots like yours.

Hey DN, very nice rifle you have there! I just used some Hornady American Wh. 150s as I have yet to load for this...can't wait to work up some 150Accubonds over Varget to see what happens. My 788 is not pretty but nice and very functional. Thanks for sharing, pics are not anywhere I can easily share but I appreciate yours. Mike

One of at least TWO rifles I wish I'd never sold - my 788 in a 223 with the old Weaver K-4.
How many coyotes it took I have no idea.

This just might be the next gun on the list I'll 'need' to get!

I have 2- a .22-250 bought new in 1974, and a used .308 I bought this year. The 22-250 has a Canjar single-set trigger and has always shot well. It's floated and glass bedded, and has taken many groundhogs over the years.

There's one occasional problem with these rifles. The .308 turned into a project to get it to shoot well. Floated barrel, glass bedded, lighter trigger spring, known good scope, but it would still sometimes throw a shot 3" or more out of a group. Drove me nuts for a while. Eventually I found the answer-the bedding/tension on the rear action screw. The threads on the rear action screw are sometimes too short, and bottom out in the rear lug. The rear tang is not held well enough. It's an oddball thread (12-by?), and I didn't have a die to chase it. I put a small washer under the rear of the trigger guard, and the rifle suddenly shot great. So, I upgraded the scope and added a Timney trigger. Ready to hunt now.
