A doctor in Virginia (who hunted where I used to) thought that the local vet would charge too much to descent a skunk. “Hell, I can do that myself.” So with his son's help, he set about it in his kitchen.
He put the skunk to sleep, then went to work with his scalpel. He was deep into one cheek of the skunk's derriere when he realized that he'd cut too deep, beyond the scent sac on that side. As he went to remove the sac, he accidentally punctured it. He and his son got up-close, face-full benefit of the skunk's perfume. With his tear ducts in overtime flood, he continued — removed the sac — then went for the sac on the other side.
And punctured that one, too.
But he went ahead blindly but “successfully.”
The skunk survived but stank.
I don't remember how he and his son got rid of the stink.

Another true story about descenting a skunk.
Washington State Univ and Univ of Idaho are 9 miles apart. Back in the 60's, pet skunks got to be a fad at both schools. The students would catch babies and take them to the WSU vet school where the vet students would do the surgery. After a few accidents that cleared the surgical classrooms, the school ordered that no more could be done inside. Another student brought in a skunk and 2 vet students set up an OR on a table in a shady spot outside the building. They had the glands out and sitting on the edge of the table while they sewed up the skunk. Another student, as a joke, walked by and hit the glands with a hammer or something. Seems that the OR was set up right under the intake for the building's a/c system. The building was evacuated.

By jove! That's the story of the Campfire in a nutshell or, skunk sack... Nah, this is closer: Skunks — sometimes mamas with their litters — were a daily sight, and skunk-hunting for live capture was a popular nightly sport. On group of young hunters ran an adult into the huge air-intake of the high school and kept poking it with a long stick to make it come out. Of course it didn't. But the kids kept poking it until it sprayed. The school kept-on doing business as usual and let ALL of us enjoy the benefits.

There are some things to do yourself and some things best left to those who know what they are doing. I think this one should go the one who knows what they they are doing.

I learned this about skunks while I was in the third grade. Read it out loud as fast as you can.
A skunk sat on a stump
The skunk thunk the stump stunk
The stump thunk the skunk stunk.
Who do you think stunk
The skunk or the stump?
The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.
