Went and ordered a SS 1-4x24 for the .308 I am setting up as a hard-use rifle. I figure it is the best option for a 0-400m rifle for deer, hogs, and 'yotes. I may well use the 1x most, due to the amount of time I spend in brushy creek bottoms and juvenile oak thickets. Chances of needing more than 4x for me is currently slim. Small size, durability, and decent glass for less than 3 bills was just too good to pass up! Now I need to get some 30mm rings for the Ruger, and hit the range.

I bought 3. Putting them on a 5.56 & 6.8 AR and a 308 FNAR. A lot of the 1-4 models have overly confusing reticles that make little sense. The SWFA is well thought out. I figure while they are on sale, I'd add some consistency to my sport utility rifles.

What is the little post sticking up at the front of the eye box of this scope? I assume it must have a function but it looks a bit odd.

It's called a cat tail. It makes changing the power at speed easier.

I see. Most cat tails I've seen are larger and look more like a lever as opposed to a post.

Is the cattail removable?

According to the manual, it comes with 3 different lengths and they thread into the magnification ring.

The cattail is removable. The power ring can be a bit stiff, so I found it useful to leave the cattail in.
The 1-4 is a nice little scope with a great reticle. Nothing like it in the price range and probably your best bet in a non-Euro 1-4 scope if you're not worried about size and weight.

I'm trying to resist but I got stumped by my 4x fixed last year when a buck froze up up less than 25 feet in some thick brush. The 4x and too much sun reflecting off the brush left us in a stand off. Another deer walked in behind me and when I turned slightly to see what this other deer was doing I got busted. The buck howled and spooked the one behind me and the sound of the one behind spooked the buck in front of me even more.
I would've love to have had a 1x that day. My fault for not going with my irons in the spot I was in. I didn't expect anything to bust through all that brush though. I wanted to stick with my 4x but I'm thinking I may have to try a 1-4.
This would be going on a CZ527 in 7.62x39. Any reasons not to?

Ordered the 1-4x24. If it doesn't work out for this rifle I'm sure I will find something to put it on.

It will, and fantastically, too. I hunt in similar conditions to what you describe, and went with the 1-4x for just such situations. The ill. reticle will be nice when twilight is added to the above scenario. I have a real hard time thinking of anything better for the rifle you have. Works close spectacularly well, and has the knobs and reticle to at least double the x39's usual range.

So it came in and I mounted it on the CZ with Warne 30mm rings. I'm on the fence about it right now.
It would actually work just fine but I don't think it will live on this rifle. While it's a good size and I like it fine the old Meopta 4x32 with Warne QD rings is just a better fit for the rifle. I like the clarity and fov better on the 4x32. As for the close shots I think I will just need to remember to take the scope off when I am in tighter settings. Maybe get a some time in on some up close targets. Its a hunting rifle and the 1-4 might actually work better but imho doesn't suite the rifle quite like I had on there.
But the SS is not totally out of the running. I have plans for a AR in 7.62x39 so when that one is completed I think the SWFA might fit that rifle better. It may come down to the CZ for hunting in from a tree stand and the AR for hunting on the ground. Will see..

I don't get the 1x. It takes 1.5 to be the same as a human eye. Does that 1x turn into a tunnel?
You did not "seen" anything, you "saw" it. A "creek" has water in it, a "crick" is what you get in your neck. Liberals with guns are nothing but hypocrites.

I don't get the 1x deal either, 2x is as low as I want to go with anything. if its that close that 2x is too much, you should not be aiming anyways rather just point.

wow x2 I bought one and it is a killer hunting scope. Wish the center IL stuff was a bit larger and the dot 1/2 min instead of 1 min
