Great caliber if you have a can. Unimpressive if you don't. Heavy, subsonic bullets with a rainbow trajectory don't do a thing for me.

But run it sub and with a can or if wanting supersonic, 7.62x39 is my logic go to over the 300/221

For the price of an upper, you can get a Ruger American 300 and pay the tax stamp for a can. Won't have to chase brass and no action noise.
I keep trying to convince myself to get a 300 but suppressed you're looking at 45 acp ballistics and as mentioned supersonic doesn't offer that much.

the velocity makes its heavily dependent on bullet technology, I never shot one subsonic, however supersonic at close range it will kill deer just fine. The advantage to the round is that supersonic even without a suppressor it is not an ear splitter. Ssecondly the recoil is just non existent. If I get another one it would be the Ruger American bolt gun with the short LOP the Ranch I think. I have no doubt out to 100 yards I can kill any deer or pig I could hit with it, but again I would only shoot those 110 grain Barnes Tac-TX bullets. They are specially formulated fo the velocity of the gun. So the biggest con is cost of operation, those are about $30 a box. Here is an exit hole on the shoulder of a small deer I shot at about 50 yds, the hole is "bigger" than what you get with a 223.

subsonic the 194 lehigh max expansion have killed well, exits like you show, the expanded bullets are generally close to an inch wide with long petals.
Have killed out to 175 easily so far with my Rem bolt gun...

Subsonic it is an efficient round. Though for minimum noise, a bolt gun will be better than the AR.
Supersonic it is a .30 carbine on steroids, which is hardly a bad thing. Shoots 110's at 2300-2400 fps, 125's at 2200-2300.
Bullets & brass are readily available for it. Uses the same mags and bolts as the 5.56. Less blasty inside a house, even without the can. I find it efficient and versatile.

I use H110 for subs for sure... at least one of the choices for 240s...
I don't load supers, be nice to see the answer on that.
Trying to part togehter an AR now, short barrel with a can that I can carry for trailing deer with Tiger, we finally ran into a live buck the other day and I didn't have a gun, and the guy that shot it the first 3 times was almost out of shells...
I think for a trailing gun, a compact AR, some kind of optic with BDC in it, low power, should be good to 100 or so yards awful easy and quiet on my old ears and the dogs ears too so he doestn'get the boom.

1680 is loud for subs and not the best if in a bolt gun noise wise... for the AR, from what i hear, its the go to powder...
I"ll have an adj block on my AR, and may open the port a bit to start with, so I can use other powders....

in fact I use lil gun for subs too.
Seems like a lot of powders work.
I tried a red dot load that was confirmed a few places.. I will NOT use that again, ejector marks moving the brass on the first shot...

what do you reload the 110 grain bullets with...H110? H110/296 or Lil'Gun are the best for 110-125gr supersonic loads. Lil'Gun is a lil' quieter, less blast and flash. Both can work for subs too in an AR, depending on your gas system and bullet weight. Bullseye is my choice for bolt gun subs though, way quieter.

Did we discuss bullseye loads and 194s ever? I"m interseted in charge weights, but maybe you and I discussed and you don't run 194s sub....
Quietest for me so far has been WW231, still testing it, N110 and Unique... would prefer NOT to have to use unique if possible...

I haven't used the 194gr Lehigh, but load the 200gr Speer SP, data should be pretty similar. Rather than try to remember offhand, I'll check my notes tonight, I just loaded some a couple weeks ago with Bullseye. I've worked with Unique for subs too; it works fine for cast bullets, but is more position sensitive, especially with jacketed bullets. The fastest pistol powders seem to be the best, and why I use Bullseye. It's quieter and less position sensitive. I use it in my 9" AR pistol sometimes; now that I've installed a side charge handle, it's just like shooting a straight pull bolt action, with Bullseye loads.

cool, if you prefer, PM me the load stuff.
Unique I can seat the bullet such that there is no load variation bascially.
Bullseye I 'm worried some about but if its working for you.
I"m tired of playing with expensive 194s just searching... need to order some 195 hornady bthps... but use 208 amaxes in the meantime just looking at sound and MV and grouping.

Sent you a pm rost. 200gr Speer SP, 6.0gr Bullseye does 1,000 fps from my 9" barrel. Work down (not up!) to that in your own barrel.
Other than double charging a case, there's not much to be concerned about with subsonic Bullseye loads. I shoot tons of them in a bunch of different calibers, up to 35 Whelen.
You may find some position sensitivity using very light cast bullets, but anything with more resistance than that seems to work great.
