Hello guys I have shot 30-06 and 280 for years and currently shooting a 280 AI for whitetail. I have for some time aimed for shoulder and with these cartridges had very good success penetrating and killing deer as long as I put the bullet where I aim.

Question is as I am now old enough to know better the recoil is bothering me a bit so I bought a 257 roberts and really love shooting it but this year I chickened out and went back to the 280 AI

Will the 257 roberts effectively give enough penetration through a big deer shoulders and get the job done as long as I do my part.

Typical ranges here in Michigan for me are 100 yards or less. They could stretch out to 200 but that would be the exception. Also the 257 loads I have come up with are using a 100 gr. partion and or a 100 gr barnes ttsx
Thanks
Rob

For a pure whitetail cartridge I don't think you can do much better than the bob. I use the 100 gr TSX and the deer seem to fall pretty quick to it.

With a bullet going over 3000 fps you should have no issue from 0-300 yards if you sight in your rifle correctly.

My single favorite cartridge is the .257 Ronerts. My favorite rifle in it is a Wnchester Model 70 Cabela's Anniversary Featherweight high grade. I don't baby it one bit!

I use Hornady Superformance rounds mostly but the rifle shoots every thing I fire in it incredibly well! I use from about 95 grain weight bullets to 117. The SST Hornady is very uniform.

I did have a .280 improved AI but parted company with it. I still have my .280 Remington Model 700 with a 24 inch stainless barrel and action and a black laminate stock.

Ingwewife has been shooting a Bob all her life. 100 grain Hornadys or 100 Grain Partitions...

I use the 308 alot, but the .257 works for me as well.

.257 Roberts 110 Accubond. Right front shoulder quartering to me. About 50 yards.

.257 Roberts 110 Accubond. Behind left front shoulder, pass through at 386 yards.

I'm new to the Bob having just built one last year. Only a few yotes and deer so far with the 100TTSX. Everything has been 1 shot and done. One deer was heart shot and ran about 50 yards before he realized he was dead. Very mild (non-existent) recoil and good performance. You won't be disappointed.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

I've been using the Rob on and off for about 25 years. My favorite deer cartridge, hand's down. I'd not hesitate to use it on elk either.

For me though, I'd sooner use a 6mm if all I were running were 100 grainers. The Rob is all about 110-120 grain bullets IMO.

My dedicated deer rifle for quite a few years was a Win 70 FWT .257. I mostly used it with handholds of 115 -120 gr Noslers at 2800 fps, but sometimes the 100 gr Win. Silvertip factory loads. Perfect deer performance on both whitetail and mule deer. And I suspect ( not bragging) that your deer are a mite smaller than our Northern SK critters. So use your .257 with confidence. it about the perfect deer cartridge IMHO. The only reason I don't still have mine is that I was talked out of it by a brother in law. My 25-06 that I replaced it with doesn't work any better.

I tried four Kimbers and couldn't get the walnut or kevlar version to perk well enough. Maybe time for a re-do this winter.

I love my Roberts, and consider it a fine deer cartridge. I have mostly used the old 120 gr core loct, but have lately been using the 117 gr Hornady. To date I have yet to catch a bullet including one of the 120s that entered the front of the chest and exited the right hip. I've never had a deer run much over 25-35 yds after the shot. I wont say it will do any better than a 30-06 or 280 but it won't do any less.

I use 100gr Hornadys in my two, as well as the .250 Savage. Does a fine job on deer. One shot, then get out your knife.

Yep its more than enough, and what it lacks in felt recoil, it made up with being able to shoot better! I wish the heck Blaser made 257 Roberts Barrels for the R-93! They didn't and if I was going to have a rifle made its a 100% chance that it would be for Bob!

I have settled on the 115 grain Nosler Partition's in my twin Bob's. Accurate and excellent performance on Whitetails at various distances.

I will get in on this one i have a 257AI i reload and last year found my self in a spot had to use the BOB for an elk hunt.
The big Mag was at the doctors getting a new barrel.
I was on a cow hunt and i do not think the Elk new the difference.
Two hundred yards and a broad side shot i never hesitated the elk hunt was over.
So i am pretty sure it will do the job for ya.
I use the 257 for my deer rifle it has killed them all Mule White tail and Black tail with out a problem.
I like the 120 grain Nosler Partition my rifle likes shooting the 120's.

What were your issues? That is on my very short list as a winter project.
