Gotcha, now we are talking ham, turkey, pork and sauerkraut. At least in German heavy Pa. I know others do different new years day things. Black Eyed pees would be fine, just a break in tradition.

We ate a lot of cabbage when I was a kid.We had it with corned beef, but Mother also fixed it with polish sausage,or pork chops, but the cabbage dish I liked most were her cabbage rolls..We always had just plain cabbage with silver coins in it for New years day.It is a tradition on my Dads side of the family. It is susposed to make you prosper,at least thats what I was always told.

Not long ago on the gunwriters' forum, a guy acted worried about the silver in low-stink longjohns due to the possibility of heavy metal poisoning. Dimes in his cabbage would likely send him over the edge.

Yeah. Silly bugger, he.

Nothing quite like real Polish cabbage rolls. Heavenly when it's cold and dark outside. I grew up in a community rich with German, Polish, Lithuanian, and other similar cultures. The people of Eastern Europe descent were derogatorily called Bohunks. They defiantly referred to themselves as Hunkies, and Hunky food played a big part of my youth. The air was thick with the smell of cabbage all winter.

The annual St Patty's ritual of CB&C pretty much exhausted the winter's supply of cabbage. Perfect timing: with the onset of warmer weather, one's gustatory cravings turned to lighter fare anyway.

Rock, my Mom used to call herself and the family Bohunks. She considered it a badge of honor. smile

Yessir. I'm Czech/Slavic on my mother's side and therefore entitled to call myself a Hunky. Grew up eating the best of many, many cultures - and remember them all very fondly.

Corned Beef and Cabbage is common at my house, both my wife and I have our share of Irish in us, and usually it's what each of us wants on our birthdays, etc. Red potatoes are a must, along with horseradish, and spicy mustard.
