I got a closeout deal at Cabela's on a Leupold VX-6 2-12x42 CDS with plex reticle for $681.00 including tax ($630.00 before tax). Tomorrow is the 90th day since purchase and the last day I can get a full refund. It's going on a 300 Win Mag but with all the bad PR about Leupold QC I have held off opening the box and mounting it. Size and power wise, it's perfect for what I want it to do.
My question to you guys is it worth mounting it and hoping it doesn't go belly up on an expensive hunt? How common are VX-6 problems if I'm not a turret twister. Secondly, the next obvious choice is a Swarovski Z6 which runs close to $2,400.00 including tax. There's no guarantee a Z6 won't fail either but I assume the failure rate is lower.
Anybody have actual experience with VX-6's failing, particularly if it's just sighted in and the turrets are not really used regularly?
Thanks for any insight.

The tin foil hat crowd has gotten way too out of control on the leupold thing.
You should keep it if you like the scope otherwise. They will either fail in the first 100 rounds or well into the thousands most of the time. Test it, and if it holds, quit worrying.
I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.

$681 is a smoking deal, I have one on a 270 win and it has been flawless I would keep it and see how it works out but if you have no confidence because of the things you have read then trip it and get a NF!

Couple days ago, forgot and opened the passenger door that had a rifle leaning against it. Out it came, barrel hit the driveway asphalt and the top of the ocular on a leupold 6x36 took it next. Took it to the range the next morning. Still dead nuts on at 100. Last shot was at 200. Same same about one inch from an x hit.

Leupold is consistantly one of the most reliable scopes made. They have an excellent, long standing reputation for customer service. For almost 4 times the price, you will get slightly better optics.

Been hunting for close to forty! years with Leupolds, still waiting to have one fail on me...

Keep it. Most people don't shoot enough to understand if it's the scope, the rifle or the load. My VX6 holds zero fine but dialing is not correct.
Every man should experience a Volvo, a Chevy 454 motor, a Jetboat, and a Leupold.

I will give you full refund on day 91 Yeah... Unbox that scope, mount it and go kill stuff. It's one of the best quality scope buys on the market and you did even better than most. I love mine. DF

DBird,
CAn't answer about failing. I have a VX-6 4-24X52 on a RUM case rifle. I fired it at least 200 times now with nary a problem. This would include one antilope and three deer.

Take it out and look it over. I bought a Leupy yesterday that barely made it past the "unboxing" test. Took off a turret cap, and the turret came off with it. I'd say their QC is a little suspect, lately. I bought this 20 minutes after I dropped off a VX3 4.5-14ao that'd just crapped the bed. These might be my last.

They all seem like good ideas when you are buying them, but the love fades fast if you use them.

I had mine out today with confidence. I had a 1-6X 24mm set on 4X and before sunrise it was very clear and bright. Brighter than the naked eye. That was pretty impressive. The reticle, especially with the red dot is really quick to get on target.

I've had a 2-12x42 for 2.5 yrs, and a 3-18x44 for 1.5, both with CDS, and they are both fantastic hunting scopes. The 2-12 has been to Africa twice and helped me whack 30'ish animals over there.
Yeah, jimmyp can be a little over-dramatic on the subject too.

The only time I've sent Leupolds back is for changing reticles and upgrading elevation turrets.
I have sent Swaro and Kahles back for repairs, more than once per brand.
Good new, they all three have great CS.

Feeling better about the VX-6 now. Thanks. Think I'll keep it and run a couple of hundred rounds through it before taking it into the backcountry. If it goes "toes up", I'll report and replace it with the Swarovski (but I'm not dying to drop the extra cash).
