It's no trophy, but exciting none the less. This is the first and only 99 I have ever owned, got it about a year ago. An early 50's EG, with a Lyman 57SA. A 150gr Nosler Partition backed with 36gr of IMR 4064 did the trick. Not exactly a varmint load but I wasn't varmint hunting.

Not a trophy??!! I'd certainly say it is. Nice coyote and great picture. Congrats!

Gotta start somewhere and I'd say that's a good way to break the ice. Like the metallic sight choice. I'd recommend the 165 grain Partition over the 150 for a little bit more reliable penetration on coyotes.

Hey, good on you!

Can you tell us more about the hunt?

Very cool! I have a similar 99EG with Lyman peep sight. Mine was made in 1937 or so. It shoots very nicely.

Nice looking EG! Any time you can lay waste to a coyote it's a good day and a good trophy. Keep up the good work.

Went to some public hunting in NE Kansas in search of deer. A buddy and me each sat on the edge of a timber out looking different fields. It wasn't long after sunrise that I saw the coyote headed my way through the milo stubble. I had already heard 3 nearby shots so made the decision to not come home empty handed and had a bad itch to shoot the 99 anyways. The coyote was on a broad side jog probably 40 yards out. I tried clicks and whistles but the dog wasn't stopping. Hit him in the hind quarters with the 1st shot and front quarters with the 2nd. Skinned him out for practice even though he had 2 softball sized holes. I'm going to try and tan the hide, maybe put it around a bow quiver or turn it into a loin cloth for the ladies laugh

Good job! Agree it's plenty trophy for a first shot, as I did something similar while handgun hunting for deer. I've seen where people make shoestrings/cord out of tanned hide, may be an option for that coyote pelt.

Heck, anymore I would almost rather shoot a coyote while deer hunting. I figure each coyote killed equals a couple fawns that might make it to puberty next spring.

If you get a 250 you can call it varmint hunting, then take a deer if you stumble into one. this was a 75g V-max in front of Varget (..iirc)

Don't forget they make varmint bullets for the .300 (and .308). So far the load that shoots Sierra's 125gr deer bullet so well in my 99R has not worked with 125gr Speer TNT, but I've got another series loaded up using H4895 with high hopes. As has been proven though, deer bullets work just fine.

I actually pressed some sierra varminter 110's, had them with me in the truck, just not in the rifle. I tested the accuracy with them, and was amazed, very accurate.

Lightfoot--it shoots great, I'm really enjoying it!

Got to the amazing point with 125gr Speer TNT's in my 99R, that bottom right group with H4895 has 4 in .55" . The last shot made it 1.25", still good enough for any shooting I'd do, keeping in mind these rounds impact higher than the 150s.
