Looking for any constructive criticism of this plan. Will be a 4-500y max whitetail gun and a coyote and fun target gun.
6.5x47 Lapua Bighorn action Bartlein or Hawk Hill #3 (both similar to others #4-5). 8 twist McM Remington Hunter with Edge fill or Remington Sporter Edge Timney Calvin Elite trigger Hawkins Aluminum bottom metal. BDL
I have am about to start accumulating the components. Thanks

Bart 2B or Brux 3 @ 20"-22" McMillan Hunter standard fill ADL or DBM (AICS mags)
I have a: 23" Broughton #4 in a McMillan Hunter with APA DBM.
Doing it over again I'd go 20" barrel and contour similar to the Bart-2B/Brux-3.

Heavy? For a fun target gun?
My 20" 47 is Light Palma Fluted, I Like....alot.
On a 4-500 yd shot, I want a steady holding rifle - so it must have some heft.....not heavy, but no flyweight.

For that barrel weight I would get Edge shell, standard fill. And keep the barrel shank to 1 inch max.

Heavy for a whitetail and coyote gun. He mentions edge fill stocks and aluminum bottom metal so I assume he's trying to keep the weight down. A #3 bartlein, which is the same as everyone else's #4, isn't a light barrel. I have a 6.5x47L on a borden action in a mcmillan edge, PT&G aluminum bottom metal, and a #2 Bartlein at 22". It's just right to me. Go up two contours to a #3 and it would be a nose heavy pig. As it is now I wouldn't hesitate to throw a turreted scope on there and use it at 500 yds.

A Hawk Hill #2 is a clone of the Bart 2b. .630 @ 24". My probable gunsmith is a proponent of going to a heavier barrel. I did a Bart #3 in an EH3 Manners @24" it was nose heavy. Have a 24" Hart #3 in a McM Remington Sporter Edge. I like its slight nose heavy balance. It actually came in @ .650 @ the muzzle in 24 ". I shot a doe yesterday freehanded with it. It is a new rifle and I was surprised at how stable it felt. Shot was over 125y. I would not have pulled the trigger if I the crosshairs had been waving off the kill zone. Perhaps a little bit of weight forward balance is a good thing? I appreciate the feedback!
How is this?
McMillan Hunter Edge. Bartlein 2b or Hawk Hill #2 @ 23 or 24" Aluminum bottom metal. Probably still a 7lb gun

I wouldn't go over 22"....I have a Bart 2b...still not a light contour but able to carry it around all day...As I age, I am thinking lighter all the time...

My probable gunsmith is a proponent of going to a heavier barrel. They always are. They also only have to carry them around their shop, not in the woods. Gunsmiths always like to build heavier barreled rigs because they're easier to make shoot with less effort. I've been talked into heavier barrels a couple of times by gunsmiths and regretted it every time. No more. A good gunsmith can build a reasonable weight rifle that will shoot well too. How is this?
McMillan Hunter Edge. Bartlein 2b or Hawk Hill #2 @ 23 or 24" Aluminum bottom metal. Probably still a 7lb gun Much better, but like 7 08 Fan I wouldn't go over 22".

What does this gun weigh? How much velocity do you think is lost going from 24-22". Super efficient round so would guess not much.

I haven't weighed it but I'd guess about 6.5 lbs. without the scope, it's pretty light but not excessively so, it feels really good in the hands. I tried to post a picture but photobucket seems to be down right now. It has a #2 bartlein but it's a little thicker in front of the chamber than their normal #2. I had to call Frank at Bartlein and plead for a #2 in 6.5mm, they'll only officially make a #2B and bigger. He said they'd make me a #2 with a bit more meat in front of the chamber, it fit fine in the edge stock inletted for a #2. All I've ever used out of it has been barnes 100 gr. ttsx running at 3100 fps. It shoots great and kicks virtually none. I'd wouldn't expect more than about 30 fps more out of a 2" longer barrel. I've cranked the 100 ttsx up to 3200 fps before but backed it down to 3100 because it shot a bit better there. I never got any pressure signs, the small primer Lapua case will handle a lot of pressure before it shows anything. A 22" barrel is a lot handier than 24" and gives up nothing of practical value in this round in my opinion. I also have a remington 700 short action 6.5x47 with a 26" M24 profile bartlein in a Mcmillan A5 stock so I know the other end of the spectrum too. It's a range toy, it doesn't go hunting. Carrying it from the truck to the bench is enough for me.

Personally I would go even shorter on the barrel if 500 yds is your max range. Even at 500 yds, a 140gr SST is still has around 1250 ft-lbs of energy being shot around 2700 FPS with 2.8 mils of drop. I wouldn't sweat a bit beefier bbl running it short. That would be a very light, handy rifle IMO.

Just curious a bartlein 2b is listed at 3.20lbs and a #3 is 3.50lbs. Doesn't seem like to much weight difference. Am I missing something?

1" including the recoil lug. The lug is .25" so it's .75" after that.

Have decided a Bartlein 2b with Rem Sporter Edge. 3/4" shank in front of recoil lug @ 23". Hope the 6.5x47L stays in favor as a Hunting round. The ability to resell is always part of my thought process when I have a gun built. If I had kept every gun I have ever purchased, I would have a massive and redundant collection. The quest for the perfect small mix of rifles is a lifelong project for me . Thanks for the feedback.

Do not expect to want to sell it I've been thru MANY MANY rifles and rounds, and for me, this is one of the best for my needs. And I am not alone....
