if a man speaks, and there isn't a woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?

I'd like to see the %s that speak those languages. My guess is that it is a steep drop off after the top 2. #3 is probably something like 5% or less in most cases, especially the German. I would agree. 5% might be one of the highest. Sycamore

Stupid map posted by a stupid person. This "data" takes in college campuses, which are a world unto themselves, and does not reflect the true states at large. Did you look at the article and see where the data came from? Which states are being skewed by the language spoken by college students? Sycamore Yes, I did. Many of them. Figure it out.

Maybe you're not reading the map correctly.

Sycamore Or, maybe you can't admit that the map is FOS. I'll place my bets on that being correct over your guess.

4ager,
I just think your English reading comprehension is not all it should be. Understandable, since you hail from a Korean speaking state.

Other than English it's been a tie here between some Mexican dudes speaking Spanish and Hutterites speaking German. And Rez tribal which is an unrecognized language.

Sam,
With 7 or 8 reservations, I'm guessing with different languages, the German speakers are third. (after english and spanish)
Might have been Irish (gaelic) 100 years ago, when Butte and anaconda were going strong!

Spot on for Washington. Gook is spoken everywhere.

Sycamore Nope. In New Mexico, it's Texan.

If Togalog is flipper, that may be true for CA. Not so much around here, I'd bet Hmong takes that one, but lots of Philippines in the bay area and LA. Spanish with an Asian accent, it does sound odd.

Not sure about the rest of the state, but there is a ton of Russians around the South Sound here in WA.

Where I'm at, it is almost all farmland on a scale not many, if any, other states can compare to. English and Spanish account for 95 percent or more in the valley.

You stole my line! I've been living in Mississippi most of my life and I've never heard anyone speak French here. The only French speakers I know of near here are the Coon Asses in Louisiana, but there aren't any here except when they come up to deer hunt. I wouldn't even call what they speak French, I very much doubt any real Frenchman could understand them.

lived in Idaho for nigh on 30 years. Had exactly one conversation in German.
Did absolutely freak out a few people by addressing them in Dutch, however......
