Well,I'm getting closer whittling on this stock, down to 80 grit. I will be sending it out for checkering. A couple questions. How do I let them know what lines per inch will match my other stock? I was thinking of using tracing paper to make copies of the shape of the panels I want. If I go over them lightly with a charcoal pencil will this be enough so they know which lines per inch to do? I assume they would want it with most of the coats of oil on it already, correct? Also, I'd like to find someone that does decent work without spending a boatload. TIA WDO

Do you have calipers? Measure groove to groove and divide 1 by that measurement. i.e 1/.050"= 20 lines per inch

Just lay a ruler on it and count the number of lines per inch. Even if you're off by one, nobody will notice.

22 is an often used count.
Your stock needs to be finished before you send it for checkering.
Just my 2 cents.

Dang, that's hard to see. Looks like .041 If one is .041" then 24 lines per inch If one groove is too small to see, measure several and divide the number of grooves by the measurement. Same formula works for any number of grooves, i.e. 5 grooves measure .227" equals 22 lines per inch. .208" would be 24 lines. Now if you used common core math you would have to factor in the angle of the dangle divided by the number of hickory nuts a gray squirrel will need this winter at a latitude of 45 degrees North.

I have had Sherry Abraham checker several stocks and pistol grips for me. I have always been satisfied with her work, she is a pleasure to do business with.

Here is Sherry's site. I used her years ago. Her site still has 2009 pricing. I ASSUME she is till in business. http://www.checkering.com/When I talked to Ahlman's years ago they were more "here are out patterns" not so much custom. If you like one of theirs they do a good job at a reasonable price.
Just my 2 cents.

Thank you for the nice mention, Butch. I am living in Idaho now. My contact info and some more pictures can be found on the ACGG website.
As for communicating a line spacing that will match another stock, I like a rubbing made with a soft pencil or a crayon, this is easy to measure and match with the guide I use. This also records the angle of the master lines, which has a big effect on the perceived size of the diamonds.

Kathy, I meant Idaho and it came out Utah. I hope you and family had a Merry Christmas. Is Dad still hanging out with Terry?

A thread pitch gauge will allow you to find the exact lines per inch.
