I've taken alot of deer with a scoped rifles. But as I increase in age the hunt, not the actual harvest, means much more. So I went to lever guns w/ peep sights. This is personal opinion but I think you have to work a little harder, be a little better to consistently get it done with an open sighted lever gun. And the end result is more fulfilling. If you have to kill to be successful, stick with what you have. If you want to have fun, maybe step back in time, get a lever gun and enjoy. I have several levers, this year saw the Win 94 w/ 26" barrel and full mag tube 30/30 in the woods for most of the season. The Marlin I harvested my first 2 deer with I gave to my son. And my Grandfathers Savage 99 is waiting in the wings. I am currently in the market for a Win 1886 in 45-70. Bottom line: most lever guns are good, some better than others. Get what makes you happy. Good Luck

You can shoot whatever lever gun you want, but if you want to have a love affair, buy one Savage 99 and hunt everything with it. Your life will never be the same.

if you handle a savage 99 you will fall in love. But you say you want 45-70. that limits thing Marlin makes them and are good accurate rifle i personally would buy a jm marked marlin if you go marlin.Henry also current manufacturer i've heard good things but never handled one.The browning BLR not sure if they made 45-70 but do make the 450 marlin

If stuck on 45-70 i say a nice older marlin

It's all a matter of personal preferance, for me it's winchester or savage. Have you considered the 348, more versatile than the 45/70. Definetly true that hunting with a lever and open sights makes hunting more challenging, exciting.

the 1886 win is fun gun. the savage 99 is really good at making you look at no other gun. i took both my deer this year with savage in 3030, plus 6 hogs. really fun. all my other guns are sitting in shame!
