Ok i posted a little while back about handing down my sav 99eg.I got pics of lad with rifle which is 1952 savage 99eg.
I do need help with where to find a new rear sight. I always had it scoped and will be buying a new k4 4 power but would like to have good open sights for him if he wants. The previous owner ground the sights to fit the scope on.

meet Jack proud new owner of the savage 99.His father my coworker and friend in backround

That is very cool.

Can't wait for hunting season pictures.

Looks like a happy new owner. Good on you. smile

Sight looks functional. Add a little cold blue. A replacement runs $40 +or-. Watch eBay or PM Lightfoot.

Do you know how the new scope will fit? Also, the later sights on the EG were lower on the sides like you have now.

Jack's gonna do great things with that rifle I predict. I look forward to seeing him pose with a buck buck taken with that EG.

Great story and picture. Good for the young man. A lifetime of memories coming.

But I have to say, what kind of person would grind down the rear sight vs getting a brass punch to knock it out instead? Even did the elevator which takes all of two seconds to remove. Wow.

Very cool. Since it's d&t already, how about a Williams Foolproof receiver sight and just toss the rear sight?

From top view it looks like a little notch is there but when you look from behind not enough to use.

Would it work if you filed the notch deeper and raised the sight?

still I prefer having the non modified sight. Even if it ends up in plastic bag in a drawer. At least if he ever decides to hunt iron sights he could. I never noticed during time I owned it.

I've got a sight if you need one, but eBay has them often.

I'd put on a vintage Weaver K4 and not look back. He will decide what type of scope he likes as he gets older, and in the meantime you can't fault the function and durability of the older Weavers. This is a very nice gift but leave room for the kid to add his own personal touches as he matures with the rifle. Heck, for that matter start him out with a peep. I think peeps teach more about the skills of riflery than scopes. And what in the world is better for working with peeps than kid eyes!

This gun had a vintage k4 scope but i kept to put on the next 99 that i already have. The only reason i kept is kinda is a connection to my father which passed in 2000 so this scope i will always have

As far as peep sights him and his father will be shooting at my range and jack will be shooting a old mossberg 144 with peep sights. He is a very good shot with bow which is a peep sight set up

There ya go. Put on a good peep. Someday he'll be able to tell a story of what he started out with on the 99 you gifted him and how when he got older he changed it out to the glass of his choice. You are forging a new tradition with him. Plus peeps are fun.
