If I still owned one,the bullet would be either a 180 or 200 gr Nosler Partition or Swift A-Frame. Whichever one of those shot better in the rifle.

My choice would be the same for the RUM as I made for my 300 Weatherby; 168 gr TTSX.

In mine the Factory Remington 200 grain Partition load shot excellent.

Either the 180 or 200 grain Partition with lots of Retumbo!

When I had a 300RUM, I used the 190 VLD over 96+ grains of R25 running 3200ish. Turned small critters inside out. Was brutal yet impressive.
I soon realized that burning half the powder killed stuff too, without the mess.

In fairness, I did not encounter quarry that might require the hammer of Thor while I owned it.

I've been using the 200gr LRX the past year or so now. Powder is RL-25.

Four of us use the the 230 gr berger match target hybrid in our 300 RUMs. It has done very well with moose, elk, and a barbary sheep to date. All exited and all animals expired immediately. I shot a cow elk at 250 yds through both scapulas and she dropped in her tracks. Meat damage to the two shoulders was minimal. Velocities in our Rums are 2850 to 2900 fps.
One friend used this bullet on a cow elk from his 300 WSM at 300 yds. Double lung, she staggered and dropped within seconds. His velocity was 2735 fps at muzzle.
Before anyone says this is a target bullet search the net for to read what others have done with this bullet. It bucks the wind, retains its energy, stops the animal fast.
Here is a link about a guy’s experience with this bullet in Africa:

180 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and the 180gr Barnes TTSX have worked well for me.

The one question I haven't seen asked here is, bullet for what purpose?

In my mind a .300 magnum is for launching heavy bullets far and flat. With that in mind I use 180 or 200 grain bullets in my .300 Weatherby which for all practical purposes is interchangeable with the .300 RUM. My favorites include the Nosler Partition or a Barnes TSX. Quicker expanding bullets have a tendency to over expand especially at close range. They make quite a mess if not used correctly.

Not sure if I'm gonna stick with 180 Partitions or try some Accubonds also might try 200 grains. I also would like to try Hornadys new 220 ELD-X bullet.

This is almost too easy, seems like a set-up! grin I'd go with the Barnes 200 gr. or 175 gr. LRX. The 300 RUM is an excellent high velocity, long range cartridge probably not to be used exclusively for "small" big game! So, with that in mind a bullet with a high BC would be a plus. But,a bullet of "stout"construction would also be in order for close range shots as to minimize the possible "grenade effect" of a conventional cup and core bullet. A logical deduction would bring you to the Barnes or a bullet of similar design. JMHO memtb
