I have a 1909 Argentine Mauser action that appears to have unaltered rails. I am going to barrel it in 6.5x55 SE. For the Mauser experts out there. Will I need to do any rail work or is the Swede close enough to the 7.65 to feed.

You should be able to test it well enough to tell before tearing the old barrel off. Try putting your swede rounds in the mag and stroke the bolt.

If it's an action, I'd suggest being "safer" and taking the firing pin out of the bolt. Not trying to be a safety sissy or anything, but it will (as a bonus) give you a good feel for the feeding.

It will feed fine without any work on the feed rails.

That would be my prediction as well.
Once in a great while the bolt-face on a 98 will be a little small for the 6.5x55, but they're easily opened up slightly, with no need to change the extractor--unless you want the extractor to "hop" the rim on a chambered round. That requires a little chamfering on the front edge of the extractor claw.

It is just the action. Thought about getting an old mauser barrel cutting it down just to test feeding.

Thanks for that reminder. That minor difference in the base diameter slipped my mind. I will check the bolt face. Since it is just the action it is difficult to feed them properly up out of the magazine for testing. I guess I will cross that bridge when I barrel it. I re-barreled another Argentine 09 that had already had the rails altered very slightly, for the .311-06, that one fed fine with the new Swede barrel. Sounds like I will not need to alter it.

Wax is your friend when you start testing feeding... not meaning to be Captain Obvious... but make that sucker slick to test true potential...
