It was subzero this morning, but with a blue sky Cookie wanted to get out. We headed south hoping to find the melanistic mule deer, did locate them, but only had distant photo opps. A few things did get in the way though. A couple ringnecksI Some swans did a fly by It was warm enough for a bath where the honkers found open water Sharpshin was doing the sit and wait thing Raccons were working the stream bank immediately below a spring outlet And the score for the day was a barn owl out in daylight

Pasted in here because the last image did not come up: The owl made it all worthwhile. We can usually find one, but they're typically backed well into the bushes. We saw this one score a nice chubby meadow vole, and a marsh hawk showed up trying for a take away. Could not get those events composed in a frame, however. And Cookie just reminded me that I forgot the bunny. Pretty much everything was out just trying to make a living. Felt a little guilty going home to a nice warm wood stove. Have a good one,

Back out again today. Found another barn owl and a long eared owl. It wasn't foggy, but this is the best Cookie could do at focusing with about 5 intervening twigs in the way. Neat looking birds, but they simply do not sit out in the open.

Great photography is not about being in the right place at the right time, it is about putting yourself in the right place at the right time.

The hovering barn owl looks pretty cool. Nice haul even without the deer.

Red Rabbit: Thanks for the comments. Did the recent southern freeze affect you folks at all? A few New Mexico folks that came up this way were complaining.

1' It was just cold here in Flagstaff. My folks and sisters in Phoenix had to cover some plants one night as it got to freezing. This week we are getting snow each day as a series of storms move across Arizona. I hope to get out to the Canyon when the snowstorm breaks- my favorite time to be there.
