Lots of choices out there for the 243. I just took possession of a Hawkeye 243. Haven't shot it yet and primarily bought it to have as a donor action should I want to re-barrel a LH short action.
There are 2 rules to success:
1. Never tell everything that you know.

it all depends on price point. Used RAR in .243 i have a line on one Hawkeyes can be had for $500 from cdnn or whittakers if they still have some, davidsons probably has more but they charge a little more too.

no more at cdnn. I'd like to stay on the low side as I will not use it much. Although I don't think I could choke down a Savage.

I do remember the guy who wrote that wasn't well received here at the fire. I have had 3 Ruger rifles over the years and they all shot well after free floating the barrel. It was easy to get multiple loads with each that grouped consistently under 1".

I'd take an American over a Hawkeye short action any day. In LH there are a few variants to choose from as well. From compact to full length, blued or stainless. Davidson's should have both lengths in stock in the stainless distributor exclusive run they did. I have the SS compact in .243 and the full length in 7mm-08. I put a standard length stock on the .243 and sold the compact stock. Probably should have held on to the compact stock as well.

6941 is the stainless compact LH, and 14 are currently in stock. The standard blued version is out of stock.

My buddy has a RAR .243 and it shoots great. His kid killed two deer with it. I have a .308 SSLH and it is fantastic.

18" barrel, 12.5" LOP Standard is 13.75" LOP, 22" barrel
The stocks are interchangeable between both models.

a tikka will cost you in the neighborhood of $650-$700 for a stainless/synthetic and another $50 for blued/walnut. While i personally dont like hawkeye because of the mauser style action there is nothing wrong with them, i just dont like the M70 even. I dont give chuck hawks reviews much weight

no more at cdnn. I'd like to stay on the low side as I will not use it much. Although I don't think I could choke down a Savage. but a RAR with a barrel nut and a bladed trigger is "ok"?
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Don't get me wrong, I have a couple Savages and they are both shootin' sons a Bs. I also have a SS RAR sitting in a box that I haven't shot yet, but sitting side by side I don't see a huge difference, I would have a hard time believing the RAR is going to shoot better than the Savages. That said everyone chits on Savage and raves about the RAR? ok.... To each their own.

LH R700 243.
Or maybe order an action from PT&G and then send it and a barrel of your choice to a gunsmith. Or buy the barreled action from PT&G if they sell those.
