Just curiosity. I have no intention to buy/build a 6.8x68mmm, but it seems very comparable to the 270 Win (more practical).

What are your thoughts when you compare the 6.5x68mm vs. 270 Winchester?

6.5x68mm data

It seems that the source above gives a water capacity of 86 g for the former vs 68.2 g for the later. Is this accurate?

My understanding of the big 6.5 is that its more 264WinMag than 270Win. But then I have a sneaking suspicion that in a 26" barrel the 270Win may be more 'smallbore magnum' than its given credit for.
Cheers...

You're right, the most direct comparison is against the 264 Win. Mag.

Craig Boddington once wrote in Safari Rifles about the 6.5x68mm and said,

If that's the case (at or better than the .264 Win. Mag), how might it compare to the .270 Win at long range?

Can it use a shorter barrel like the .270 Win eg 22-23" or as you and I suspect, must it have at least 24+" to produce significantly higher velocities to gain an edge over the 270?

The .264 Win Mag seems to be making a comeback but the 6.5x68mm is better than the 26 Nosler and better than the 6.5-300 weatherby.

I guess the 6.8X68 was a misprint.

It's a 6.5x68mm. They exist and very popular in Europe for mountain hunting.

the x68mm case is a phenom for the LR crowd, but gets no notice in the USA.

I really want to build a 7x68

In my 26" Remington Sendero 270 Winchester, 130 grain ballistic tips are traveling right at 3300fps +-.

I wouldn't go 24" on a 264, 26" minimum - mine wears a 30". I do plan on a 6.5x68 in the future. I have the reamer, barrel (30") and an action (98 Mauser). I need to thread the barrel, get brass (to make a dummy) and send it off to the 'smith. I try to do my own work, but in this case a man has to know his limitations.

And yes, there is the cool factor that anything in the 270 bore will NEVER have.
