When is a surface vessel a "boat" and when is it a "ship"???

I don't think its down to size or armament alone, as "gunboats" used to be a fair size and fairly heavily armed??

Is it to do with the vessels draught???

I think there's some overlap here and there, but much of it has to do with hull design - displacement hulls vs planing hulls.

Ships use a displacement hull. Boats such as the old PTs, Swift and/or pleasurecraft like bass boats et al use a planing style.

However, submarines which are obviously NEVER on plane are always referred to as "boats"..

You can put a boat on a ship, but can't put a ship on a boat.

US Naval ships will all start will the moniker "USS _", that is except for subs, which are boats.

Logic and the military are not always well acquainted.

USS stands for United States Ship, so there is that. Except as stated above a submarine is always a boat, even though it is USS. Torpedo boats are boats, frigates are ships. Somewhere in there is the break. I am not sure what the criteria is.

Commissioning Pendant and all the things that come with a Commanding Officer etc. it's that simple. Subs like Redneck said are called boats, mainly as a term of endearment and tradition as the original subs were not commissioned...

I wonder why those two Navy Ships would surrender to Iran?
Were they unarmed spy boats or were they told not to fight, just surrender?

Coast Guard, a ship is 65' in length or greater and is named. US Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Bernard C. Webber

Under 65' it is numbered, a 41 footer for example would could have the call sign 'CG 41326'

And yes, a ship in the CG has a commanding officer, a boat does not.

The old definition of a ship was that it had at least 3 masts and all the sails were square. We got away from that, over time.

Oddly enough, the freighters on the Great Lakes are often called 'boats' even though they are several hundred feet to over a thousand feet long.

Technically incorrect, but common useage.

Who is in charge of a <65' boat?

The aviators were referred to as passengers.
