I know Pink Floyd sang about it, but I can excuse them because they are musicians and not journalists. Reuters writers, however, are supposed to be journalists who should try to be accurate and to use correct terminology. We certainly know from many examples that they very frequently show great misunderstanding and very frequently just out and out lie when it comes to reporting about firearms. Their lack of understanding bleeds over into other fields.

Reuters reported that China is planning on making a soft landing on the dark side of the moon in the next few years.

There is no part of the surface of the moon that is dark all the time.

They later started talking about the far side of the moon, but they seemed to equate the far side with the dark side. The two are not the same by any shadow of the imagination. We see very little of the far side from earth but see some of the dark side all month long except during the full moon.

It takes the moon the same amount of time, about a month, to rotate as it does to revolve around the earth. We are, therefore, always looking at the same part of the moon. Sometimes that part is dark while sometimes it is illuminated.

Does this really matter? Not really except to point out that the people we use to inform us about the events of the world frequently don't have a clue about what they are reporting.

Some people can think,. some can write.

If China lands there, it will become the dark side, no matter how much sunlight it receives.

The far side of the moon is interesting because it's very different from the near side. Folks have theories about why it's so different, but nobody knows for sure.

1 theory: The far side is always exposed to open space and it's meteors. The near side, facing earth, possibly doesn't get hit as often because earth pulls the meteors in instead of the moon.
