We haven't had a state income tax in what, about 30 years.
If we roll the clock back 30 years, state spending should be rolled back 30 years too.

Shared services flights hold ~125 people. If all their flights were full and everyone worked a 2 and 2, there would be ~10,000 positions on the slope. There have been significant layoffs and cut backs in drilling, not to mention ~1/3 of slope workers live out of state, but say 5000 Alaskans work on the slope. Then you have oil field support in Anchorage and somewhat in Fairbanks for spare parts, food services, shipping, engineering, etc. Only a small percentage of people that work in oil either on the slope or in town supporting them are employees of BP or Conoco.
But yes, the government can't wait to punish the productive members of society with heavy taxation.

Cut back state government to the bare minimum of services and end the PFD payout. Put the principal and the interest/dividends into a fund to pay for state government......AFTER passing legislation putting a hard cap on state spending.
There really is no valid argument, IMO, for people in AK to receive a PFD. Talk about a socialist program! I have no problem with using it to pay for gov. I don't care how many snogos and liters of booze it pumps into the state economy, I think it does more social harm than good anyway.

I wonder if you get kickbacks from Alaska Powersports, Compeau's, and RavnAlaska? (or NOT!) ...and while we're at it, roll back the Vote Dope Alaska, and close Brown Jug....speaking of more harm than good! And then there was the idiot who suggested that Alaska needs to consider the lottery. (Stupid is as Stupid does I suppose.) (But I do think we might/should consider PFD cutbacks... significantly.)

Pull Tabs are significant sources of revenue for governmental entities in rural areas if more proof is needed that 'games of chance' are problem solvers. (We all know how highly thought of, the functioning of rural places are. ) "Hey, you want to buy a drum of stove oil for $200? You give me cash, I'll go sign the energy assistance, and you can fill u your drum." (Yeah, I know it's a buck seventy-five per gallon on the road. Villages still sell fuels for $6-8/gallon. $4/gallon is a very good deal. Deals are made to get cash.)
