I've got an SLR adjustable gas block that I just started messing with and so far I don't have any complaints.

What's your budget?

SLR Rifleworks
JP Rifles
Seekins Precision

Make sure you know where the adjustments are & that they are accessible through whatever rail/handguard you are going to use.

Seekins are around $100 & JP is about the same as I recall.

SLR goes for around $175 or thereabouts.

The simple button is to buy a BCM 11.5" upper with BCG and GFCH for $510 and put some $30 Magpul handguards on it. BCM generally ports their stuff correctly and I'd completely skip an adjustable gas block.
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Standard-11-5-LIGHT-WEIGHT-Upper-Receiver-p/bcm-urg-car-11lw.htm

I don't know about the lower with the pistol buffer tube. I'm assuming it's a standard length tube. I'd start with a Sprinco white spring and an H2 buffer and go from there.

I looked around and didn't see a lot available for 11.5" barrels in the budget market. If it were me I'd start with Faxon and Rainier's budget line. I haven't used either but have heard enough good stuff to try them. They both publish the gas port sizes for their barrels and you could get an idea if an adjustable gas block would be needed.

The SLR can be had for around $100-$120.

If you build I'd look at ALG's new LPKs that come with a trigger. And if you go FF rail I'd look there too. I got an ALG rail recently and really like it a lot.

If you want to go balls out I'd get this....
BCM 12.5" barrel with carbine gas, but a fixed front sight post at the mid-length location so rails and hand guards will fit. It's $560 of Awesome+P.

I don't have a budget. I just want to try an 11.5" AR so I can determine if it has any utility.

your thinking 516, the PM400 is DI plus its a weird color!! I don't know about the SIG's, never owned one I just saw the thing on gun broker with its embossed spartan helmet, and thought it looked cool and all.

Well, KISS is usually the best plan but I suggested the adjustable gas block to allow for more flexibility if you were going to use it with & w/o a can.

The Sig 400 is nice. I was looking at building a short .300 and walked into my local Crack dealer and he had the Sig sitting on the counter. Has backup sights and the Sig brace on it for $1300. Hard to build one with quality parts for that. Thinking of picking it up and getting the SBR stamp and might as well get a .30 suppressor while I still can use my trust the easy way.

You might be onto something with that one.
