Can somebody recommend a good one? It will see a lot of rounds. 11.5" barrel is what I'm wanting. Travis

pistol caliber or 223? I wouldn't know either way, but figured I'd ask so I can note the replies.

Buy a complete upper, build the lower, probably the most cost effective route, depending on how high you want to go on the top end. PSA's got a lot of fairly low priced uppers..........just don't forget that for the most part, you get what you pay for. MM

I want to have some time with that barrel length before I determine. This would be a less-committed/expensive means of seeing if it's worth it.
I kinda gave up on the idea but then I watched John Wick again so now I'm back to trying one.
But to answer your question it will primarily be ran without a can.

SLR Rifleworks
JP Rifles
Seekins Precision
Make sure you know where the adjustments are & that they are accessible through whatever rail/handguard you are going to use.
Seekins are around $100 & JP is about the same as I recall.
SLR goes for around $175 or thereabouts.

The simple button is to buy a BCM 11.5" upper with BCG and GFCH for $510 and put some $30 Magpul handguards on it. BCM generally ports their stuff correctly and I'd completely skip an adjustable gas block.
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Standard-11-5-LIGHT-WEIGHT-Upper-Receiver-p/bcm-urg-car-11lw.htm I don't know about the lower with the pistol buffer tube. I'm assuming it's a standard length tube. I'd start with a Sprinco white spring and an H2 buffer and go from there.
I looked around and didn't see a lot available for 11.5" barrels in the budget market. If it were me I'd start with Faxon and Rainier's budget line. I haven't used either but have heard enough good stuff to try them. They both publish the gas port sizes for their barrels and you could get an idea if an adjustable gas block would be needed.
The SLR can be had for around $100-$120.
If you build I'd look at ALG's new LPKs that come with a trigger. And if you go FF rail I'd look there too. I got an ALG rail recently and really like it a lot.
If you want to go balls out I'd get this....
BCM 12.5" barrel with carbine gas, but a fixed front sight post at the mid-length location so rails and hand guards will fit. It's $560 of Awesome+P.

I don't have a budget. I just want to try an 11.5" AR so I can determine if it has any utility.

Well,
KISS is usually the best plan but I suggested the adjustable gas block to allow for more flexibility if you were going to use it with & w/o a can.

The Sig 400 is nice. I was looking at building a short .300 and walked into my local Crack dealer and he had the Sig sitting on the counter. Has backup sights and the Sig brace on it for $1300. Hard to build one with quality parts for that. Thinking of picking it up and getting the SBR stamp and might as well get a .30 suppressor while I still can use my trust the easy way.

Melonite = salt bath nitriding.
I have a SIG 400 with a 16" barrel & bolt that is nitrided.
The finish of melonite is dark gray to black depending on the alloy & process, but is not as coarse a finish as is standard manganese phosphate which is used on many steel AR barrels & bolts.
Melonite is much tougher & provides a hard wear surface.

does your barrel and chamber look "shiny"? I like how SIG tech tells me they only use chrome on the military intended guns and nitride on the civilian intended guns...Just sayin is all.

The SIG I have is not a Spartan PM 400.............just a regular SIG M400 Enhanced model with a 16" barrel.
Like this one.

Turns out to be the P400 Elite
http://sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDetails/pm400-elite.aspx I will let you know how it shoots in a few days. I told him to hold it for me. I am going to do the stamp to SBR it and go ahead and pick up a suppressor while I can still go with my trust. Yeah I know you still can after June but I don't want to have to send in photos and prints for my whole family. Now another topic for advise. Which .30 can? I shall start another thread

A quick update:
I acquired a stripped lower and decided to move forward on this. I already had a Sig Brace I found in a clearance bin.
I tried to order what Blue recommended but they were all out of them so I went with this:
http://daytonatactical.com/collecti...a2-sight-tower-with-quadrail-no-80-lower I have never heard of, or seen a Daytona Tactical but I can tell already this thing is going to be the most awesomest gun in my armory.
I cannot wait.
Dave

FYI, it's not as horribly obnoxious as I thought it would be as far as noise and muzzle blast. We wore inner and outer ears and had no issues. Travis

Why SBR vs the sig brace? I'm looking at building a 9mm AR for the spousal unit, 7 1/2" barrel with a suppressor. 2 stamps SBR vs just one if I go with the sig brace.

More flexibility.
I am kicking around the 9mm idea myself but not until Blue praises this build first.

15 years ago I bought a Para Ordnance Carbon Fiber Type 97 AR15 pistol [before Bushmaster bought them] for $1000. I shot it twice, and took it to the pawn shop and sold it for $850 on consignment. I normally never sell guns, but I wanted to get it away from me. It was too loud and the flash was too bright, and I could not hit anything with it.

I never fought in Viet Nam. I had a college deferment and a high draft number. I own my weight in handguns. I am attracted to them. Especially Colts. 1) But the noise from the AR15 handgun was coming through the hearing protectors AND the ear plugs. 2) At the range, the employee would run to see what was causing the flash. 3) I could not keep the groups on the paper. I was repulsed by that hand gun. Three strikes and you are out.
