Any one have any ideas on where I can find a peep sight for my 75th anniversary 99..prefer a Williams type..The receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope.

Williams still sells receiver sights for d&t'd 99's. Check MidwayUSA.com for a Williams FPS for Savage 99.

I'd also check online auction sites but don't pay any more than what they go for new, and preferably less as the site will likely be used.

I have checked quite a few sites that have peep sites for 99s and really don't find any that have what I call enough knowledge about 99s to even list enough information about 99s to let a prospective buyer know which sites fit which rifles..To make that sentence easier to process, I am saying that those individuals that are listing peep sites don't know their ass from a hole in the ground..So I am stuck with finding photos of 99s with peep sites on them..all that I see have the site mounted on the tang from what Looks like is two holes for mounting screws...My anniversary 1895 has no screws on the tang..the only mounting holes are for mounting a scope base..in order to keep the rifle 'as manufactured' that is where the peep site should be placed..well, I have yet to see a site that is designed to fit there..Now, I don't mind buying something that doesn't work (my past is evidence of that), but it's at least gotta look possible...Any help here??

I have seen so many Savage 99's with this type of peep sight, and when removed, they have a chunk of wood missing. Is this sight going to do that? Am I the only one to have seen this and is what I am seeing because people put the wrong sight on a 99, or is the wood that much different from gun to gun?

From my experience, it was the old Redfield sights that caused people to hack off wood to give them clearance. Haven't seen or heard of the Williams being a problem with either tang or receiver mounting.

I've got a Lyman 57SB here that mounts to the scope mount holes, not the tang sight holes on the older guns.

Seems like I see the removed wood more often on the Lyman 56's than any others. Interesting..

I've had a 56 on my pre-war R in 303 Sav and never had to remove any wood.

I have a NIB 56 I never mounted because it won't clear the pads on the butt stock. The 57 does clear the pads as does the Redfield 70 and 80. When you compare the underside of the 56 to the 57, the latter has a distinct relief cut milled into the base near the tang extension. Lacking the relief cut the 57 digs into the stock on the back side of the base. At least this is how mine looks and fits. I kind of figured the 57 was made with the carbine in mind as it didn't have the pads on the butt stock. Of course I really don't know and this is just my best guess.

Back in the day metal work wasn't up to the standard that it is today. Back then the 99 receivers had more tolerance in the specs as did the Lyman and Redfield sights. Sometimes you ended up with a sight with max tolerance in one direction and a receiver with max tolerance in the other and some wood had to go. Not a planned thing but just the way it was back in the day.

Ok, I received the Williams sight, installed it and found that I can barely slide a piece of paper between the sight base and the stock..Think I will relieve some of the sight base metal to get close to 3/16" of space between the two..other than that, I will bore sight the rifle today and see if my old eyes are near as good as my young ones were..I know I'm more patient now, so That will make up for the excitement of my youth. Thanks for your help..

I bought a William's FP, tang mount, in 2010 from a fellow member on this site. He had it on an early 50,s EG and I believed he had to relieve the stock for clearance. I installed the FP on an 1918-19 vintage M.250-3000 Rifle and it cleared O.K. but like on yours the clearance is paper thin. With the sight installed, take elevation all the way down and check it with a pc. of paper, if it slides in behind, it should be O.K. On mine, printer paper didn't clear but a page from a Natchez catalog cleared O.K.
Dave.
