Help me plan a 6.5-06 AI build on a $1500 budget. Thanks in advance. Intent is to make this an easy to carry all weather hunting rifle throwing premium bullets in the 120-145 grain range

I built one a few years back. Remington 700 la .473 bolt face. I used a 26 inch shilen barrel 1-9 twist ( if I did it again I would go 1-8) I set it up to shoot 120-130 grain bullets. I think 1-8 would be better for 140 grain bullets. I ran 120 grain nosler ballistic tips at 3150-3200 fps. I used a timney trigger and a B & C stock. Rifle was about 8 lbs w/o a scope. I enjoyed the rifle, it shot great but ended up selling it. I now have a 6.5 creedmoor and a .264 win mag to satisfy my 6.5 craving. The 6.5 - 06 ai is a nice round......I made brass for it buy opening up 25-06 brass. RL 22 was the powder that seemed to work the best. It's easier for me to run the 264 win mag. I bought a model 70 extreme weather. No flies on the 6.5-06 ai. Good luck on your build.

Buy a used Kimber Montana in 270 winchester or 30-06, unscrew tube, screw new one on. Go 8 twist at 23-24" duping montana contour. I'd just go 6.5-06 to save the time and components spent fireforming but 2940 fps is fast enough for me with 140s.

I got better velocity, accuracy was close. My 6.5 itch is being scratched by that gun, a 6.5 Creedmoor, a 6.5x55 and a 26 Nosler... DF

buy a Tikka in 6.5x55.
go to youtube and follow the simple instructions to change the bolt stop from short action to long action.
ream to 6.5-06AI
use the 30-06 tikka magazines
Use the remaining $750-$850 for a scope and loading components to gain trigger time.

Good thread- I've got a Rem700 LA that is waiting to have something done and my eye has been on 6.5-06 or AI.
What length barrel do you like? I'm leaning towards a 26" and I have RL19/22 available.

I built mine on a lefty 700, but if shooting righthanded, would go Montana today. That said, a #2 contour Hart, 8 twist cut no longer than 24" in a mcmillan edge would do fine again.
H1000 for best velocity with 140s, RL22 was close.

I am doing the Kimber route as we speak. Its a whole lot of gun for the money. You can also resale the original barrel if unfired for 150 to 200 bucks or so.

I did one once. They are nice, but you can save money by doing a 6.5/284. Or a plain 6.5/06.

Should be able to pick from several actions at that price.
I'd do a Zastava or FN Mauser, should be able to pick up a used one with the pretty good factory trigger or a good converted military(VZ-24 or other good variant) 98 with a good trigger for $500 easy enough. Sell off the barrel and stock for $200 or so.
ER Shaw #1 1/8 ss for $275(shipped) Installed by ITD $65 B&C Medalist $270 from stocky's Talley's $40 Complete Roguard finish/np3 on all internal parts $370(you said all weather)
Little under $1450 + whatever the take off parts bring. Probably get you into the $1100-1200 range.
There are lighter actions, could do this for less on a 700 or 110, but hey I like 98s.

I don't always shoot Mausers, but when I do...I prefer VZ-24s.

I think you'd need to turn back the Tikka barrel it wouldn't be a straight re-chamber due to web dimensions.
