Nobody has looked close at the top of the receiver... Hint, hint. I'll bite, I can't pick out anything out of order on the receiver other than the side drilling. No roll stamp on the bridge, but that's not wrong.

Those holes on the side look wider than a T7 would be. Bettin' it was some other mount on there.
Saw the 2 holes near the cocking indicator but got tired of the game.
Any holes on the receiver ring?

Are both holes in front of the indicator?

So I guess the 24-Thousand dollar question would be - Is it all factory original?

Rory, I have a rifle with that style checkering, early one around 1904-5 but the checkering is finer, Beautiful gun! here's a closeup for the forearm on the Cabela's gun. It doesn't have the "flame" points on the front.

Beautiful 99! I think someone said something about the rear sight being from a Winchester .22. My 23A, which is all original except for the butt plate, has the same rear sight. It's an ugly little thing with a screw in the middle for adjusting elevation.

That was the final consensus.. guys at Cabela's said the stocks were a replacement set, though I'm not sure what they based it on. So replaced stocks (or just refinished) and a danged good copy of a Savage checkering style. An odd duck for sure.

Stroeble's 1st edition page 294. 23A's should have a rear sight with a sliding elevator. Winchester 03 4th picture Winchester 1904 Winchester 1903

It's a pretty one. That's more than I paid for the H with the Malcolm scope. I think I'm at the point I'm going to try and lean toward condition. But, it's hard, I met a guy fishing back in the summer and he's supposed to be hooking me up with his dad's 30-30. He said all he remembers about the rifle is it has the round counter in the side. He said it was in pretty rough shape and his dad probably hadn't had it out in at least 30-40 years. If the price is right, I have to buy it, don't I? Joe.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

Yeah, whoever replaced the wood and checkered it did a mighty fine job of it. I wouldn't kick it out of bed.
Would I pay $1000 for it? Probably not, but I can appreciate who did the work wanting to try and re-coup his money. If he paid to have that checkering done it cost him at least $200, and probably more. Add to that a set of pre-carved stocks and fitting and finishing of same and you're breathing hard on half of the asking price.
