2014: A friend's deer 2014: 2015: It's not all that bad in VT! The one in the middle is nice. I wouldn't waste a bullet on the other 2.

The difference being that where you hunt, those 2 deer might not be anything special, but in other places they might be the only legal deer that a hunter might see during an entire season. Under that scenario, you can see how hunters would feel a certain urgency to shoot the first legal deer that they see.

Ghostman where have you hunted? Killed a lot of bigger bucks yourself?

I've never really felt the need to "conserve" my ammo! Seriously, though, my last twenty years or so of hunting in northern New England would have been pretty boring if I always saved the bullet for a big one.

Ghost, I see you're from Maryland, so I can understand your sentiments. I hunted on a big farm on the Sassafrass River for a few years when I was a kid. I can honestly say I saw more deer per day there than I have in all my years of hunting in VT combined. It was fun.

Ghostman where have you hunted? Killed a lot of bigger bucks yourself? Roughly 15 states, East Coast & Mid West Does 20 or so in the 140 class, 3 in the 150s and a 168" buck constitute a lot?

Depends where you hunt. I strongly suspect you've been spoiled. I could put you in country here in NY where you'd damn well shoot whatever buck you saw during the season or get used to eating tag soup more seasons than not. On the other hand, I could put you where killing a 120-140" buck ain't that big a feat and any clod foot could do it fairly regularly.

Not bad. Thanks for the info. I don't think that's a reason to dump on other people's bucks. You may feel differently....Not everyone has been as lucky as you to kill so many big ones.

Deer hunting vs. deer farming
Neither are bad. Both are fun.

Thats awesome. I hope my kids show an interest in hunting. Still too early to tell. I hunt up in the adirondacks and any of those would be a trophy in my book. Saw a total of 15 deer this year hunting every weekend and a week and a half around thanksgiving.

I see VT every day as I live on the west side of champlain, Read every post on this thread and yes you are right deer are not plentaful in Vermont. But I bet if you can kill a deer up here every year you can kill a deer anywhere in the USA. I can cross the road and walk for 20 miles without crossing another road (priceless) and there are deer It's been 30 years since I haven't shot one and That because I was in Korea
