Plenty of good brass available and it fits fine in a 700 action with any bullet you like if throated properly.

If you want a little more speed and don't mind fireforming and additional die cost, do a 243 AI. you will be rewarded with more speed, little case stretch and a little longer throat life

I like the .243AI and hunted with one the first time this year. Don't really need the extra speed for what I do, but the ease of using basic .243 ammo is nice. The case stretch and throat life pulled me to the AI over the standard.

Two things I know:

1) I'd never do a 6x57 on a short action

2) I'd never do a 6-284 on a short action

I personally love my 6mm-250 and a 6mm-250 AI would offer the case capacity of a 6x57 with lots of mag space & high-quality brass availability in Lapua 22-250 as well as quantity in other brands of the same. Good AI shoulder minimizes stretch, and longer neck than 243 increases throat life.

Win/Win/Win.

Of course as you pointed out there are no bad options. You have only yourself to please.

Good luck,

Efw

Thanks for all the suggestions. For a hunting rifle the brass availability and cost of dies and possibly a reamer is favoring the plain old .243. But if I can snag some brass for the others then they are still in the running. I figure if I go with the .284 version and get 200 cases then that might be enough to burn out the barrel.

6/284, 6slr, 6-47mm, 6 Creedmore and of course .243 and AI are still in the running. I am thinking most of the high BC bullets do best somewhere around 2900-3100 fps so not sure if the 284 would be that much better. Is there a higher velocity accuracy node?

The .240 Weatherby and 6-06 are considered reasonable hunting cartridges is the 6/.284 worse in the round count number?

I will shoot hogs, javelina, coyotes and rocks past 400 yards, rocks way past.

Agree. This is a very intriguing and potentially economic round.

I've got a 6 creed and 7 twist 243. Next barrel will probably be a 243AI. 115 dtacs are a lot of fun.

Pretty much, but I found ammo on a couple websites the other day for about $30 a box, Fed and Hornady. So, it's only expensive and difficult, not impossible.

Don't need much for 300 yards and I still can't come up with a single reason to do a 284 version, other than folks like making shiet complicated.

I could be wrong because I have no experience w/ this myself, but my sense is that the numbers you see cited for the 6-284 being a barrel burner are from competition shooters running strings that cause barrel overheating.

The 240 & 6-06 are hunting cartridges so you don't see that same dynamic working itself out. My experience is that one REALLY extends barrel life ehen it isn't run hot.

With ammo currently available, I'd consider buying or building a 6mm now, but since I'd most likely do a build on an FN or Zastava Mauser, the 6/06 would be a logical choice. With my use and considering my age, barrel life shouldn't be a big issue.

Build a standard 243 on a ruger and you get 2.900" of latitude.

Ruger twists their .243's right so no need to build on one.

Ruger twist on the RPR is fine for 105gr bullet but the factory magazine even limits how long you can load that. For sure you need an aftermarket magazine to load 115s long, same applies for the 105gr if youd like to get below .015 off the lands with out the tip dragging on the front of the magazine.

We have about 400 rounds through the RPR in .243 and this is probably the only "kind of " negative thing I have seen. R

I built an 8 twist 243 a couple of years ago and shoot the 105 grain Berger bullets at 2825 fps with a 22" barrel. If i could do it again I would get a longer barrel but with this setup it will print one hole groups at 100 yards and will shoot 1/2 moa out to 500.

I am currently waiting on a Benchmark 26" .243 7.75 twist varmint contour to twist on to a Savage varmint action. I look forward to great things from it......

Not on an m77. I'm shooting 115s in mine and they fit in the mag fine. Might lose that ability as I chase the throat. I think I'm at 2.870" right now...

A couple years ago, I bought an ADL synthetic in 243 and had the chamber recut to 6mm-284. My 'smith used a WSM follower to assist with feeding issues.

A gentleman on the 'fire offered to sell me dies.(thanks again Woody). I use Federal 6.5-284 brass.

I am shooting 95's at 3300 fps. A lot of folks would push it harder. But it does anything I need.

No, Scott is right. It does not do a thing the 243 or 6mm Rem wouldn't. I just think the 6mm-284 is more interesting. I enjoy working through the obstacles associated with the wildcat.
