I have a genuine 1st world problem.

Do I keep the used Vari Xiii 4.5-14x50 AO or a new in box VX3 4.5-14x40 AO.

Will only be used for range work at 100 yards (or 300 if I can get to the Fort Dix range)

I'd keep the VX-3.

+5 no need for 50mm for that use, and the newer scope will have some advantages

50 for hunting. 40 for the range.

My finely honed powers of deduction are starting to identify a trend.

Bushmaster1313: I have Leupold 4.5x14's (with A/O) on several of my Rifles for Varmint and Big Game Hunting.
I love them!
I do though, mostly, Hunt with them and have never owned (or seen the need for!) a 50 m/m objective lensed Rifle scope.
Plus the 40 m/m look MUCH better on a Rifle (at least to my eye).
Best of luck to you with whichever you keep.

The newer VX3s, are better optically, to an extent, than the older VX-IIIs. Here is a generational comparison chart of Leupolds Vari-X and VX lines. Both are great scopes, but I prefer the 40mm myself.

If'n ur gonna keep the 40 and send the 50 on a trip, let me know. Never been fond of the 1" 40mm version of the 4.5-14. To me it has a limited eye-box. The 1" 50mm version does not exhibit the same limitation, IMHO.

I never thought I'd grow up to be a grumpy old man, but I did, and I'm killin' it.
